Poll question: Glinda: Good Witch or Enabler?
In honor of The Wizard of Oz, showing tonight on TBS. When Dorothy ends up in Munchkinland, Glinda tells Dorothy that "if anyone can get you back to Kansas, perhaps the Wizard of Oz can." At the end, of course, we learn this is not true.

1. Glinda's Manipulative, of course.
Why is never made quite clear. "For her own good" just doesn't do it in my book.

17. Definitely manipulative.
And using Dorothy's misfortune for her own purposes.

2. You know what has always pissed me off
about Glinda? When she tells Dorothy that she always had the power to go back to Kansas but she did not tell her until she killed the witch for her. I think I might have popped that smarmy sweet smile off of her face for that. I have thought about that since I was a kid. Sheeeesh.

at least with the wicked witch of the east and west, you knew they were evil (their names give it away) But with that Glenda, she's all smiles and sets you up. She's the republican witch. smiles to your face

3. You mean this movie?
"Transported to a surreal landscape, a young girl kills the first
woman she meets, then teams up with three complete strangers to kill again."

...She waits until Dorothy comes back(!) to tell her what she could have at the beginning? :wtf:
Slap that crown off the bitch's head, Dorothy!

But of course...no movie, then.

Required disclaimer: I LOVE this film! :)

13. My question:
Wicked Witch of the East - Dead from Random House Dropping.

Wicked Witch of the West - Dead from Aggravated Melting.

Glinda, Good Witch of the North - Republican Trickster.

That leaves the mysterious Good/Wicked Witch of the South.

Why do we never hear about her? What are they trying to hide? What was she up to? I sense a cover-up...

Just saying...

RL

16. READ the book
Glinda WAS the Witch of the South. Witch of the North was a completely different person. Glinda didn't come into the story till the very end.

20. Actually, I did read it.
Edited on Sun Nov-21-04 12:31 AM by RevCheesehead
But my original post is about the MOVIE, not the book. In the movie, Glinda says "I am Glinda, the Good Witch of the North."

There are many discrepancies with the book - like the green goggles/glasses they had to wear in Oz, and so on.

But, thanks to your suggestion, I'm going to pull it out and read it again! (It was my mom's copy - she got it in 1939 as a get-well gift after being hit by a car.)

was not to your original post, but to RetroLounge, the fellow asking about who was the Witch of the South.

But, heck, it's always a good idea to read the Wizrd of Oz. An excellent childrens' book that adults can enjoy too. they are all too rare.

18. There are about 14 Oz books. Glinda IS the witch of the South.
The movie witch is the Witch of the North - who is older and nameless.
Glinda is younger, has a boyfriend - and is quite tricky as well. As I said, you have to read them all (although some are repetitive and not quite as good as the first story)

28. Dorothy & comp free him from the king of the flying mokeys
when - manipulated- to get a magic helmet. Glinda gets to keep the boyfriend AND the helmet - which she lends to Dorothy in another book.

29. Nope, that
was another sorceress, Gayalette, who gave the helmet to her husband as a wedding gift, and enslaved the monkeys to iit because they had assaulted him and offended her. Every wearer was able to command the monkeys 3 times and only 3 times. The Cap fell into the hands of the Withc of the west who used in to enslave the Winkies. Her last command was to capture Dorothy.

When Glinda got the Cap from Dorothy, she used it to return the Scarecrow, Tin Woodman, and Cowardly Lion to their respective kingdom, and gave the Cap to the king of the monkeys, so that they would henceforth be free. So Glinda was sort of a civil rights pioneer. Which makes sense as L. Frank Baum had generally progressive opinions. They shine out through his books if one knows what to look for. His wife was in the feminist movement of the time.

30. She's kind of a bitch.
I didn't really understand her (or the Wicked Witch Of The West) until I read Gregory Maguire's Wicked. I highly recommend this book to all DUers. Very progressive and feminist themes.
