Joe Cocker covers REM's "Everybody Hurts"...I have my doubts.
The disc reportedly features guest guitar solos from Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Steve Lukather and Jeff "Skunk" Baxter.

...matter of fact, I have assitional doubts about several tracks on his latest, already out in Europe and scheduled for USA release on January 29, 2005:

Heart and Soul
What's Going On
I Put a Spell on You
Chain of Fools
Every Kind of People
One
Love Don't Live Here
I Who Have Nothing
Don't Let Me Be Lonely
Maybe I'm Amazed
Jealous Guy
I Keep Forgetting
Everybody Hurts

1. Hard to say, but
never 'misunderestimate' J.C.'s ability on a cover.

6. He did a pretty interesting cover of Gary Wright's "Love Is Alive"...
...just cranked the volume, made it a complete guitar stomper and attitude showcase. Pulled out a few shouts and vocal inflections that I didn't think he still had in him.

:toast:

2. Some of his covers I like, some I don't.

Even the ones I like, I often like the originals better (cf Randy Newman's 'Leave Your Hat On'). I never could stand Cocker's cover of 'With A Little Help From My Friends,' but then 'She Came In Through The Bathroom Window' wasn't bad. He's a mixed bag with that stuff.

Hell, I laughed my ass off when I heard Johnny Cash had covered Soundgarden's 'Rusty Cage.' Until I heard it.

4. That Cash cover version gives me the cold friggin' chills...pure genius.
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers have been quoted as saying that some of their best work was on that album. They're right...

I've heard that producer Rick Rubin was responsible for suggesting that one, for conceptualizing how Cash could get inside of it and make it his own.

7. I found that one much more startling, to my sensibilities ...
than his cover of Trent Reznor's 'Hurt,' not to take anything away from that one. That he seemed, for no reason I could explain, to have cut right through to the bone on 'Rusty Cage' blew me away.

5. A great song can be covered by anyone.
The song's the thing. Who'd of thunk STP's "Shine" would sound great covered by Dolly Parton and a Blue Grass band. If you can find an original vinyl release of "Private Dancer" by Tina Turner, the last track is a killer bluesy version of the Beatle's "Help". And how about "Route 66"...Depeche Mode even covered that song! Or Henley's "Sit down your rockin' the boat", a show tune for Crissake!
It really is the song that's most important, and "Everybody Hurts" is a great song, although maybe Cocker should try "Can't get there from here."

8. I worked for Joe for a while.
I took care of George's and Jeff Pevar's guitars.

Joe is simply one of the sweetest guys in the world. A real mensch.
