Ahhhhh...... the Martini. Nature's perfect elixir.
It is your friend on bad days, to remove the pain. It is your friend on the good days, to make the celebration and the goodness last. On a just-okay day, it is a ray of sunshine; and on an overly exuberant day, it helps keep the sun shining. It cleanses the pallate, refreshes the mind, makes you sit up straighter and take notice of the world. Aye, there is no more perfect drink. Praise be to Nature for giving us - the Martini.

3. Are you a purist?
Is this a traditional Martini or one of the 'tini' cocktails?

14. Oh, please. I'm not some kind of yuppie fuckhead.
I know that a Martini IS a cocktail, and am not ignorant enough to think that "martini" means cockatil.

Hell yes, I'm a purist. I take my food and drink very seriously.

Thanks be to God that you, as well as some others, respect the traditions and pay them proper homage.

the words "apple" and "Martini" should never go to together. In fact, no other words should ever be associated with Martini, though I am willing to admit to the reality of the Vodka Martini.

I have to admit...
...I hate gin. But I love a very good, very cold, very dry vodka martini.

I have to agree with you, though, that only gin, vermouth, and olives *should* bear the name martini.

Show the glass a picture of the inventor of vermouth (which is really Benedetto Carpano).

18. I must admit that I've never had a proper Martini
I have dabbled in several pure liquor concoctions though.

I love olives. That's it. Next time I order a drink, it will be a Martini. My instinct says vodka (Gin smells like it should be fueling an engine) but I will go with gin to honour the Martini purists.

21. Woo hoo! YAY!!
And make sure to order a gin by name - don't go with rail gin. It never works. Ask for Sapphire, which is great. Hendricks - if they have it (which they likely won't). Boodles is excellent. And if they have Magellan (which also they likely won't, since it's fairly new) order that.

I like mine very dry. Though, I have to admit, as much as I consider myself a purist and a snob, the classic Martini - the original - was 2 parts gin to one part vermouth. Which I find undrinkable. I like a ratio of about 25:1 (25 gin to 1 vermouth). So, admittedly, even I am not a true Martini purist.

But I am quite serious in saying never go with rail gin - it's always crap. Name your gin.

And, in fact, that's a very important command for any drink you ever order anywhere - never trust the rail liquor.

You'll pay for a call brand, but, my God, the extra buck or two is worth it to have something that actually tastes good and isn't full of impurities that can either make a hangover, or make one worse.

And let us know how you like it when you have one!

13. A martini is classicly:
Gin and vermouth, with 2oz. of gin being standard and the amount of vermouth variable depending on taste. Garnish is either olives or lemon peel.

16. AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGGGGGGGGGG!!!!
GOPisEvil is right - NO IT ISN'T!! It's a cocktail.

And only the uninformed and truly tasteless call it a "cosmo". It's a Cosmopolitan.

Never trust a person who asks for a "cosmo". If I were the bartender, I would not serve you anything, and would ask such a person to leave my bar, or use the proper name.

20. But when it comes to things sacred - and that includes anything
that enters the body through the mouth - one should show proper respect, and, at least, attempt to have knowledge of the vast history and tradition behind it.

And sadly, there is probably only one place in the world in which the Cosmopolitan is made properly. A very small bar in the meat packing district of Manhattan. A small bar owned by the guy who re-invented and perfected the Cosmopolitan. I shall not offer its name, for it is a small bar - a very small bar - and already too many poseurs go there, and the bartender/owner - a very good man with great respect for the bar tending tradition - gets sick of the poseurs.

Just that, as far as I know, there's only one place that makes them properly - in terms of proper ingredients.

28. great churchill story about martinis
His recipe: Pour a bottle of ice cold gin into a pitcher. Glance at a bottle of vermouth from across the room. Pour gin into glasses and add olives.

He's prolly the only guy to like gin more than I do.

That means no fucking ice, no fucking water, and no fucking vermouth. Maybe two big green olives or a twist of lemon.
