I love my new job!
I accepted a position at a County Jail. I am the Nursing Supervisor over 10 nurses and support staff in the Medical Infirmary. Current census is 750 inmates.....14 who are pregnant, 2 ready to deliver in a week! Multiple medical issues.....this is a dream job for me.

I have oodles of correctional nursing experience; from various prisons via nursing pool contracts and also previously working at a city jail.

The hard part is that I have to orientate for the next month while I complete my last 4 weeks of my hospital contract. This is a balancing act. Fortunately,I can just set-up my own orientation schedule which is a great....

1. Congrats!
Prison nursing has never appealed to me personally, but it sounds like you enjoy it. We get lots of inmates at UNC (state hospital I work in), that's enough for me.

I'm doing a 12 week contract in GI procedures right now - the money is GREAT! I like prep/recovery the most of anything I've done so I'm enjoying it for the most part...great staff too!

It's always nice to find a job you LIKE, isn't it?

:)

7. My hospital contract is through Aureus Medical Group.
It is a "Traveler" assignment. Yes, the pay if definitely super. I have a few referral bonuses to look forward to this time! Aureus is simply the most pleasant group to work for, always approachable.

2. Great news!
You don't often hear people enjoying work in the prison system, I'm glad you're able to help some of the most disenfranchised people in the country. :hi:

3. disenfranchised ?
I agree with you if they are there for drug offenses. The ones in jail for armed robbery or murder are not disenfranchised.

4. Most women are incarcerated for drug or money crimes
I doubt that there are many hardcore types there..

6. True......
But some of the mentioned crimes involve the death of another....A women "high" and her child drowns in the tub; a lover is shot.....The pregnant addict.....

It's definitely not a job for a REPUBLICAN! One must be able to detach 100% from the crime. I actually don't think to ask or desire to ask about the incarceration beyond how it would affect my delivery of care. The length of sentence matters with care planning and release/discharge planning for ongoing heath care......Are they going into the community again or to prison? Each destination would require a plan.

5. The opportunity to render health care teaching
and wellness is wide open! Just think of the diabetic teaching alone! I will add on clinic divisions to control the continuity of care. Right now its a bit too loose for me. Inmates want manipulate on occasion....get secondary gains
We also have STD Clinic... :scared:

Right now things are pretty much disorganized from my view point. I so look forward to streamlining our delivery system. Assigning outlined duties per shift. They tend to want to "put out fires" and let the impulsivity of the community run the show. Not any more...

:smoke:

Yes, this is the dream job.
