Why does the hurricane smell like the ocean? |
|
I'm in Pennsylvania, and a long way from any beach. But when I go outside tonight, the smell of brine is so strong, I feel as though I've just driven through the Pine Barrens and am about to hit the Jersey Shore.
I thought rainstorms came entirely from evaporation and the water was naturally distilled. Are hurricanes that intense that they can suck water up from the sea, brine and all?
Inquiring minds want to know.

Sometimes strong winds from the southeast here in South Texas will do the same thing.

My parents are in Mifflinburg (Union County) and I'm wondering if they're gonna get hit hard. I'd expect the storm to die down a lot that far in-land.
