71. I Loved Gene Tierney in "The Ghost And Mrs. Muir"...
she wasn't that old when she died... only 70 years old. I believe she was a heavy smoker and that contributed to hear death.

She did have some striking features and was a very attractive woman. I liked her role is Lucy Muir for the way she managed to balance the role of a delicate grieving widow and being "proper" for the period along with her strong desire to be a new independent turn-of-the-century (1900's, 20th century) woman.

34. Nope.......... Lassie wasn't an "Actress".
From the "Unofficial Lassie Website" .........

"All the dogs portraying Lassie have been male. A female collie was hired to play the lead in Lassie Come Home, but when an opportunity came to film "Lassie" negotiating some rapids, the female reportedly would have nothing to do with the rushing water. Rudd Weatherwax's collie "Pal" was substituted, and not only stole the stunt but won the role. Weatherwax continued to use male collies in the role for a good reason: both sexes shed in the summer (when most movies and television shows traditionally film most of their episodes), but since the male has a thicker coat, he wouldn't look so scrawny during filming. Also, fans tend to think of Lassie as a "big heroic dog." Female collies are usually 10-15 pounds lighter than their male counterparts, therefore a male dog playing Lassie would look more impressive. Female collies were not ignored because they are any less intelligent; in fact, some of Lassie's stunt doubles have been females."

and it wouldn't be the first cross-dresser in Hollywood.

53. I Think you're corret...
Lassie, despite her name, was always portrayed by a male dog.

Furthermore, in a way, Lassie is still with us. I think there have been six or seven Lassies over the years, all descended from the original.

I heard Benji made a movie recently...maybe he/she will tell...

"What Ever Happened To Baby Jane" is one of my favorite movies of all time.

However, I really have a soft spot for "Mr. Skeffington." I watch it every time I see it come on - even if I have to drop something else to do so. Do you know that one?

Most of the other ladies on this list had long careers, but hers was cut short. Back in the day, several Houston folkies sang "Jean Harlow Died the Other Day"--a Leadbelly tune, I believe.

69. Lillian Gish
As a teenager, I attended a lecture in which she showed scenes from her greatest films, talked about her work with D.W. Griffith, and what it was like being a heroine in the silents.

If you haven't seen any of her pictures, try these for a quick biography:

"Way Down East (1920) - The father of her child abandons her; her baby dies in her arms; she has nothing more to live for. An absolutely harrowing climax on the frozen Connecticut River.

"The Night of the Hunter (1955) - Charles Laughton's only directorial effort, and worth every minute. Lillian was a wonderful foil for arch-villain Robert Mitchum.

"The Whales of August" (1988) - With Bette Davis and Vincent Price; her last film.

Edited on Tue Nov-23-04 12:31 AM by Adenoid_Hynkel

my ideal girl- stylish, elegant, super intelligent (she was a great writer after retiring from the screen), great politics, and breathtakingly gorgeous

- underrated and forgotten to a large extent these days, but she broke a lot of ground for women behind the scenes in films, had a great spunk about her in her roles. too bad she turned into a weird rightwing recluse in her older age, but in her youth she was cool

about as good as it gets as far as acting ability goes. great in the silent films of her youth and the talkies that followed. if you haven't seen it, check out her amazing performance at 93 in 1987's the whales of august' -and, according to a friend of mine who knew her in her later years, she was VERY liberal
