Praise be! My parents have procured decent wine for Thanksgiving!
This holiday, I get to deal with my grandparents.
They live clear across the country, so this is a rare treat. Yes, I love them dearly, but in small doses. They will be asking far too many questions for which they don't want the answers, but will be mad if I don't answer -- mostly about my love life, my ex's love life and perhaps the racial makeup of the neighborhood I live in. Ugh.

Anyhow...my parents have made things a bit better, because they actually have decent wine on hand (a Renwood old-vine Zin and a 2002 German Riesling). Usually...they do not have much alcohol on hand; if they do, it's whatever their friends brought to their last dinner party and it can be hit or miss. White Zinfandel, anyone? (Yes, I am a snob.)

This will make things a lot more comfortable.

9. They'll each have a little nip.
The plan is to get me sufficiently medicated.

2. White zin is a sin
I'd bring my own bottle to any festivities at which this is being served.

11. Indeed.
I have brought wine in the past. But this year, my dad said, "I have good wine." I was understandably wary, so I asked him to read me the labels. He did well.

5. What do you have against the box?
I love the box, that way I don't have to go out to get wine that often!!!!:toast:

14. there are excellent wines which come in "bag in box" packages
Edited on Sun Nov-21-04 06:46 PM by Kellanved
The bag principle is a lot better than the normal "big" container (canister), as it doesn't let air in.
Good, young wines are sold in "bag in box" packages in supermarkets; better wine merchants have open wines and can fill up "bags in boxes" on demand.

Well, that's pretty much the European perspective on it ;-).

16. Decent boxed wine is coming to the U.S....
There is no reason that wine in a box has to be vile -- same with screw-top wine.

Major wineries are beginning to put screw tops on (and eliminate cork taint altogether), and people are starting to get over the psychological resistance.

19. thought so
The boxes were adopted pretty quickly; but the plastic pseudocorks are still a no-no (and rightly so).
Screwcaps are ok for simple whites, but most people stick to the old idea that the "screw" part should come last. So perfectly good for wines one buys for own consumption, but not so for guests and presents.

4. May I come?
It will just be my dry (you can interpret that both ways...) parents and me on Thursday.

We all decided this weekend that we hate this fucking holiday.

13. They really don't want my answers, either.
But they ask anyway, then bitch if I answer, bitch if I don't answer.

15. I've had the worst earworm this weekend - I thought of you
Yesterday on my way to Pilates, I heard "Fantasy" by Aldo Nova on our '80s retro-flashback station. It was requested by some evil person from Victoria.

Please. Make it stop.

I've got "Wrong Way" from Sublime, because the kids upstairs were blasting it out a window today.

7. They do have something of the sweetened Concord variety
:puke:

...but thankfully, I don't have to drink it. I think it's an unopened bottle from a couple of Passovers ago.

Hi, Fen!

22. I have a nice Pinot Grigio for Thanksgiving.
We all like it. Well, except for the triplets, but they probably would if we let them near it.

 to them...they are only 4...we keep it well away from them.
