I 'm starting a new discussion forum, looking for suggestions

I am looking to add a discussion forum to my website, but I am not very experienced with them. I am sure there are a lot of people here who have been on a lot of discussion forums, so I am asking for your help. What are some discussion forums that have technical *features* that you really like?

My favorite is probably http://www.velvetrope.com The discussion forums are great because:

1. After you login in, it tells you exactly how many new posts there are in each thread since your last visit.

2. When you click on a thread, takes you to the first post that you haven't seen.

I, like many other people, don't like scrolling through a 80 post thread trying to figure out where I left off. The Velvetrope.com uses an old version of UBB.threads (6.0.3), and the new versions no longer have these features.

Any info would be greatly appreciated.

7. This is the only discussion forum I use

so I will just tell you what I like about this one. I like the 'my posts' feature which keeps track of your posts and shows you if you've had any replies to them. I also like the format of this board: the way it keeps track of the posts in the section between the originbal post and the replies to the thread and shows if you've had a reply to your own post. I've visited a couple of other discussion forums and find that they can be confusing because they lack the aforementioned feature.

i like the way it's setup here but i don't know how they did that. what kind of forum are you putting up? politics?
