flying from Detroit to Australia |
|
I am planning to fly from Detroit to Australia in mid December. I will need to be there about 6-8 weeks, but I don't know for sure. Does anyone have any advice on open ended tickets? Flights to Australia in general? Thanks!

1. You can probably get something open ended in business class. |
|
Otherwise, talk to the travel agents.

2. Where are you heading? |
|
There isn't really that much option, from the US you will have to fly out of San Francisco or LA, to either Sydney, Melbourne or Brisbane.
Whichever you choose, it will take about 14 hours (slight variations due to point of departure and entry, but over that time scale it doesn't matter much)
As for open ended tickets, I have no idea.
The govt website for such things would be www.dfat.gov.au

and if they don't have a bunch of movies on that 14 hour flight, I think I will die.

4. Normally, they have lots of movies |
|
About 4-5 shown on a display on the back of the forward seat.

5. Of course, you could always break up the trip by |
|
stopping over in Hawaii on the way over and some other Pacific island on the way back.
I did a 14-hour flight once: non-stop from Tokyo to New York-JFK. Horrible.

You can also fly from SF to New Zealand (Auckland) then on to Aus.

6. Does your airline have in seat movies |
|
They can ease the pain, the ones where everyone has their own screen and 12 channels (repeated ad-nausem, just like cable :-) ) At least then there is some amount of choice.
And remember, when you are here, all prices already include tax, and you aren't expected to tip :-)

8. If this is business-related, let the company |
|
deal with it. Otherwise, couldn't you just buy a round trip and modify as needed?

9. it is business related |
|
but it is coming out of a budget. I keep what's left over. The cheapest thing so far is about $2300. Yuck.
