Can I be the first to say "fuck Christmas '04"?
Seriously, this one is going to suck. My mom is sick. The Former Mrs. Amok is somewhere ruining her new boyfriend's marriage and screwing his kids up, and everything sucks.

Everything.

So fuck Christmas.

There. I've said it. Who's with me?

3. It sounds like your week isn't getting any better
Sorry about your mom. It sounds like you're better off without your ex. I don't suppose the theives who took your stuff changed their minds and sent it back to you?

Ironically, with such low expectations for Christmas, you'll most likely have an OK time. I gave up planning 'fun' things for New Years Eve a few years ago. Since then, I've usually had a good time.

7. Too religious for me
The whole baby Jesus thing makes me ill, and the obese alcoholic transporting toys via a reindeer laden sleigh congers up pedophilic nightmares. But I don't wish to spoil the mood. Ho HO hOOO.

13. Have always hated the fucking holidays
Another idiotic family absurdist psychodrama-rama. A story by Kafka as filmed by Pedro Almodovar.

I wish I were alone, as I chose to be many years, so happily. It's going to be sickening living through this one. I really don't know how I am going to stand it.

If someone is selling a 2 month long coma, I'm buying. Another reason MFK Day is my favorite holiday -- it's well past fucking Christmas.

14. Aw, sweetie.
I don't want to fuck Christmas, but I do want to give you a hug.

Just do whatever you need to do. Tune it all out, whatever. There's no law saying you have to be happy at Christmas.

Again,

16. Only if I can be the second!
I'm an only child whose parents are both dead, who has never been married, and who is not currently in a relationship. As such, I fully expect Christmas '04 to be the same as the last several were for me: I'll sleep until about 2:00 p.m., grab a bite to eat either at a Chinese place or a diner, and then do my annual Christmas Day fill-in at the college radio station with which I've been involved since 1992.

Actually, my Christmas airshift this year won't be a fill-in. Rather, it'll be my own show, THE SOUL EXPRESS, which runs from 9:00 p.m. - midnight on Saturdays. I will not, however, be playing holiday music that night. I've done Christmas fill-ins at WHUS every year since 1998, and have never played a single Yuletide record the entire time!

17. You need to cheer up. Remember rum+egg nog= christmas cheer
Seriously though, sorry to hear that your mother is sick. Tend to her and comfort her. As far as the former Mrs. Amok, that's someone else's problem.

19. Sometimes the best Christmases appear dreary at first...
You might try focusing on your mom, and giving her a wonderful Christmas. Or put your heart into some sort of volunteer work over the holidays. The surest way to ease your own troubles is to offer comfort to someone else who's troubled.

I'm sorry about your marriage. It sure sounds like you're better off without her. Maybe Christmas will make the ex's boyfriend wake up to the fact that he has kids to think about.

20. What defines a "good Christmas"?
I'm a religious person, so I celebrate Christmas mostly as a way of honoring the Christian belief in the incarnation of God in the person of Jesus of Nazareth. In that spirit, in thanksgiving for the gift that was given, I give gifts to others.

Lately, our family has decided to scale way back on Christmas gifts. We may be trying to contribute to "Milk Menagerie" through Heifer International (www.heifer.org) -- two goats, a heifer, and a water buffalo to people who suffer from hunger in poor areas throughout the world.

I am one of the lucky ones, I guess. I truly love and enjoy being with my family. We are scattered around the country, and Christmas is one of the few times we make it a priority to be together. I'm the only one who claims the full Christian significance of the holiday, but all the rest find significance in thoughts of the light coming into the world (close to solstice, y'know), the spirit of giving that enters into human hearts at all times of year and is celebrated now, the wonder that still overtakes the nieces and nephews as they talk of Santa and the receipt of gifts that just show the abundance of the universe.

All of this can come even if there's not a lot of money for gifts. It can come if you have the love and wherewithall to write a poem, draw a picture, bake some cookies, or in some other way show the people you love that you care about them.

And if you can't do that, opt out. No law says you have to celebrate, be happy, or even like Christmas. Etiquette might suggest that you not actively work on spoiling it for those who do, however.
