Someone PM'd me and informed me of this thread that was started earlier. I am disgusted that the suggestion was made. I am further nauseated and very insulted that anybody would think that just because a teenager is making an argument, their age makes it invalid. There are forty five year olds here (without naming names) that are less coherent than the teenagers that come on this board. For as progressive as the people on this message board typically are, this really really surprised me.

1. Consider the source, Lefty.
Nothing that team has said all day has made sense.

Most of us here value diverse input... particularly youthful input.

Those two are the exception, NOT the rule.

5. It just surprised me.
The posters that said yes are typically posters who do not have problems debating with kids.

13. If you can frame an argument in a cogent manner, you belong.
If you can't, you probably voted for the Chimp.

Those two have an agenda, and nothing you or I say will deter them. They viciously attacked a wonderful member of this board, with no apparent remorse. Their posts will be hidden by their friends by tomorrow, but the vidcaps will live forever.

2. Yeah, I agree
I'm hardly under 18 myself, but I think that the idea, and particularly the way it was posited, said a lot more about some incredibly arogant 18+ posters (not naming any names, of course...) than anything else...

Although the most of the under 18 are at a disadvantage when it comes to debating politics (you need at least a full high school education to do that well), there are many teens that are as smart, if not smarter, than adults.

I value all opinions, as I would assume most of DU does. Besides, young DUers add a unique perspective that I appreciate :)

There are a great number of us younger folks who can make far more cogent arguments than some so-called adults, and that particular thread proved it.

Why do people automatically assume that they get wiser as they get older?

Being older does not mean that you deserve respect, particularly if you act as if your maturity level hasn't aged since you were 13. :eyes:

I mean NOT to demean them BUT what if something inappropriate is said. (no I am not a fundie.) It is Excellent to see Teenagers actually expressing themselves but at the same time when I was younger if I came across or was PMed some "Shocking" pictures from Iraq I could not take it. I was a sensitive child and yeah I had my view points and all.

I short I just thought as a way of protecting not censoring them in anyway.

21. Not to be rude, but what are you talking about?
I've been here for three years now. Politics is what I'm here for. If teenagers are unable to handle the consequences that come with debating serious issues, then they should not be here. I'm choosing to be here, and I don't want to be sheltered from anything that the adults are being shown. That is the highest form of censorship, and I won't have it. I don't want to be protected from the truth.

41. True this is a political forum and politics should be talked about BUT I
I seen some political debates become cruel and very spiteful and just down right hurtful. Not only that I speak from personal experience. I spoke to an older gentleman about war and he stuck some GRAPHIC war photos in my face and told me I was just a snot-noise kid and should be in at least 3 types of war before I even begin to give an opinion. If anything I believe adults should encourage and help independent thought in teenagers. That is the big problem about high school now at days. My cousin complains she is not allow to debate anymore that she is told just remember the facts which have been told to her.

22. In fact, one of them refused to reply to me.
The male half of that team asked me my age, and refused to respond to me unless I told him... said he would not debate children, or something like that.

I replied, without stating my age... just mentioned that I am old enough to have grandchildren and that I have a couple degrees under my belt. Oddly, that reply was deleted.

And still he refuses to respond.

51. Haven't we overprotected kids in the last 30 years?
Tried to keep them from anything distasteful, 'morbid', human and natural to the point that when they do get out they find out the world doesn't even come close to resembling what they've been led to believe.

True, I might not want them in a porn room but in today's atmosphere there are so few places where they can learn to flex their citizenship muscles that tryin to keep them out would be SO counterproductive. After all, it isn't going to be other 18 year olds sending them off to die in the sand. And I'd much rather see them in here sharpening their talking points and debating skills than being so naive they don't know how to counter the crap that is going to come their way.

As for protecting their sensibilities from things like the Carlin 7, I learned the word fuck and it's use as a 12 year old in an all-girls, Catholic, cloistered convent boarding school. All you do is make yourself look stupid to the kids by pretending that these words have funny symbols in them or that they are too young to be hearing them.

10. Well for the record
I enjoy the contributions of teenagers here and I think it's important for teens to be politically active and aware. What better way to learn about political issues? Most all the teenagers I've seen here (that I know are teenagers) have handled themselves exceptionally well and have been very mature.

There might be a few adults who have a problem with teens posting here, but I, for one, do not.

When I first got into politics, I was 19, but I could kick any Repuke's ass in an argument over politics. I'm 39 now, and I love seeing young people here and on any board, getting actively involved in how this country works. The young adults of today are the left-leaning future of tomorrow, and if there are any "adults" who can't handle talking politics with them, I think it says more about the older person's level of maturity than the teen's.

I think many adult posters here get tired of explaining their premises and beliefs and they lash out on the most convenient targets when it's really the Freepers that are frustrating them.

Truely mature people don't have a problem slowing down and explaining themselves to learners. They recognize that it helps them to better understand their own beliefs. More proof that age and maturity have nothing to do with each other.

first thing i never knew you or j kleeb were young adults until recently. although my daughter doesn`t post here she`s been reading du since she was 17 and has become politically aware enough that she is taking political science in college. if we old guys and gals can`t discuss what we have learned over the years and you can`t ask questions about our experiences- well we are pretty well screwed aren`t we. i`m to old to fight but never to old to consul...

48. I agree.. no disclaimer needed
I saw his post in ATA. A stronger case could be made for a special symbol next to those who don't know what they are talking about, regardless of age. I think most of us here welcome you and others your age. Diversity is to be valued and embraced.

As a side note, a lounge topic about what other symbols next to names could make for fun.

52. I just peeked at the thread and thought it was hysterical-----
One of the silly ones posted that some of us are in our forties and fifties and teenagers don't have the life experience for a serious discussion.

Pretty funny! I'm 72 and feel the same way about people in their forties and fifties.

I also hope you realize that the age thing is ridiculous and it's too bad it took place.

If you can't handle yourself in an argument with an 18 year old, maybe it's you who lack experience and informed positions.

56. I wish I'd known at 18 that
I'd feel no smarter at 32 than I did then. I might have stopped all the self-censorship and taken more chances at expressing myself. There's nothing so mystical that comes with being an adult. And information isn't dangerous. It's misinformation and secrecy that's dangerous. Just look at our wonderful government for proof of that.

61. "Won't somebody PLEASE think of the CHILDREN!"
...to quote Helen Lovejoy of the Simpsons. It's usually a last refuge of someone with a weak position they're trying to defend. Reminds me of something someone on AAR said this week: If a group has the word "Family" in their name, you know they're pissed off about something.

Freedom of speech isn't limited by age, and one of the original posters talks about not wanting to argue with someone under a certain age. Are we here to argue? No... if you want to argue, go to the Monty Python Argument Clinic, or Fark, or Fight Club, or Yahoo or Fr33R3public. Yes, we can encourage lively debate here, but the difference between debate and argument is what sets DU apart from the flamewar zones of those other places. A person's age never seems to enter into it around here.

On the other hand, if someone posts something outright idiotic, someone else will call them on it, regardless of age. Like LPFF did here.

63. Seems to me....
... that some people may want to discuss cheating on their spouses as if it is a good thing and don't want anyone to give them any grief for it. Or suggest that "adults' can but minors can't.

Personally - I think everyone should assume that they may be discussing "whatever" with their mother or their grandmother or their children or their grandchildren and basically anyone.... (except freepers, etc. :) ) and have that lead the topic and tone of discussion.

It's 'coherent' not 'coherant'.

When criticizing the writing skills of others, you may want to use the spell checker.

Calling this poster "sweetie" in this context is condescending and bordering on rude. I'm guessing it won't earn you any respect in her eyes.

Posts that are offensive or factless will be eliminated on their own. I think most of the young people are here because we really care about politics, and like to talk about it. I worked at the Boston headquarters for 4 months, and I saw tons of high school kids volunteering and holding the same intern position that I had. We're committed, and our voices are especially important because we are the FUTURE of the party. We see hundreds or thousands of people our age every day at school, and we have the unique power to reach them as a peer in a way that older people can not.

One or two bad apples is no justification for a "symbol," and they are also NO justification for claiming that one is necessary.

115. I'm OK with it
but only if we also get a crankly old bastard(& Bastardette) icon so we can discount the views of those to passed it to know better...oops did I just make a sweeping generalisation about an entire age group - how very unprogressive of me.

It's typical really people spend so much time criticising youth for not being informed and for not having an opinion then they tell them to shut up because you're too young to know when they DO put their opinions out there.

I so NOT "youth" anymore but thankfully no matter HOW old I get I wont make the presumption that people are ill informed because of their age - I know that when I was a teenager I was better informed than plenty of the adults around me.

Who do you think would do better in a political debate, Lauru Bush or Chelsea Clinton?

JohnKleeb and Leftpeople always have something interesting to say and the only reason I have a clue how old they are is that I remember being surprised when they mentioned it in the past.

I never asked you to apologize to me or for your opinions.

I have ALSO been here three years, so please don't throw the "seniority" of your husband onto me or anybody else.I simply posted a response to your opinion. I had every right to post what I did, as you had a right to post what you did.

I've never harboured ill will toward you or your husband. In fact, I had been very impressed by a lot of your previous actions here on DU. But I find it sick that in this day in age, people would have to be forced to wear a scarlet letter upon their backs, especially in such a progressive forum.

why the youth in this country are so apathetic. Could it be because adults keep telling them to shut the hell up?

and DU isn't it. If someone is afraid of flirting with someone underage, themn they need to not flirt here and go to THAT site, where they can talk dirty to strangers, 'unleashed' as it were.

135. That kind of behavior from the poster who started the thread...
...in question didn't surprise me in the slightest. That poster has always been an insufferable know-it-all in about every context/thread I've ever run across him in.
