Marine Recruiters at Marching Band Finals Comp... |
|
As many of y'all know, I had my marching band comp in Concord, CA this weekend. Everything was fine, we didn't make finals (got 5th out of 12 in our division), but it's our first year in this division too. Anyways...
So where they're selling t-shirts and food and stuff, there's this giant inflatable Marine behind the booth with a bunch of soldiers near it. Apparently, if you could (for girls) hang on to the pull up bar or (for guys) do a certain number of pull-ups, you would get like free posters and stuff. The catch? You'd have to fill out a form with your name and address. This only disturbed me because of the very real possibility of a draft, and the fact that my friends that gave away their addresses are of age to be drafted.

1. I'd do it, but use the name + address of a chickenhawk |
|
Hmm... I'll have to start learning the addresses of some of the idiot chickenhawks I go to school with.

3. They were just trying to recruit. |

Selective Service is not relying on blow up Marines to get the addresses of future cannon fodder. Schools have to supply that information.
My mother had a classmate who was a fine musician--a horn player of some kind. As members of the graduating class of 1939, the guys had a clue that military service might well be their future. So my mother's friend joined the Navy & got a gig in a band on a ship. Better than slogging through the mud, y'know?
The ship was the Battleship Arizona. He's still there.
