So...did I miss anything in the SPORTS world this weekend? |
|
Good Lord! That had to be two of the STUPIDEST things I have ever seen.
First of all the idiot who felt so compelled to get involved in the game that he threw a cup at Ron Artest was flat out WRONG. The DA was on the Today Show this morning and he said that the guy had been identified and would be prosecuted.
What Artest did was STUPID for two main reasons 1.You have no idea who the people in the stands are and what they have in their pockets. I didn't catch much of the commentary on this and I think the following point has not been made so as not to put the thought into anyone's mind BUT-as far as I know except from the Super Bowl there is little if any screening of fans done and the likelihood of a gun being in the crowd is therefore high. Hell you know almost everyone in the crowd has a set of keys in their pocket.
2.Have you ever tried to step up or down on a folding stadium seat? Artest could have easily broken his ankle or wrenched his knee and would then NEVER play pro ball again. Same goes for O'Neill sliding into that punch (BTW- that guy in the Pistons jersey who stupidly went onto the floor sure could take a punch).
And then the SC Clemson melee. :eyes: I think Tommy Bowden was right to mention that every news/sports cast of that morning had footage of the Pistons Pacers fight-not that that excuses the actions of the football players but it certainly contributed. ESPN summarily dismissed what Bowden had said in a "You are going to question the MEDIA? We can destroy you" kind of way.
Lastly, not to bash the cops but what in the hell were those SC state troopers DOING? I understand that they were outnumbered but when the fight comes TO them why didn't they isolate it and start cuffing people? Maybe they were concerned about getting caught up in it and one of their guns getting lose, see above.
I don't know but the whole thing is sad and embarrassing.

1. What the heck WAS that? |
|
My brother called and was like, "Turn on ESPN NOW" and for a second, I thought I'd punched in the wrong number and was watching a movie or something. Yikes!

11. A sign of the times I think |
|
That was my wife's first reaction "Well in times of fear and anger....." I can't remember what she said but it was very profound.

10. NO some teams are fun to watch |
|
The Kings (they run the Princeton offense) and the Mavs come to mind but the Eastern Conference is as you said a grab and hold game. See my post below-there is no flow to the game everyone is playing not to lose.

9. The NBA has become a boring halfcourt game anyway |
|
They talk about their lack of stars all the want but the real problem is that everyone adopted the "Stop Jordan" defense and it became a slow step by step LOW SCORING (that's right I said it) timeout riddled game.
I am not proposing the track meets that they have had at times but the beauty of the Magic/Larry years was the PASSING and the flow of the game-even the Bulls' triangle offense and the Jazz's pick and roll were like a dance. Now it is just like a "three yards and a cloud of dust" football game.
