So I watched 'Caligula' yesterday.
The unrated, 160 minutes version.

Holy crap! What a cast, but what a movie! Anyone seen this version?

2. Kept making me dizzy with the incongruities
I saw the uncut version some years ago.

I mean, one minute, there's a whole group performing explicit sexual acts (trying to stay kind of clean for the Lounge), and the next shot, there's Sir John Gielgud, contemplating the situation next to someone's bucking behind. Same with Macolm McDowell (and he was in a few scenes himself, IIRC).

That has to be the most expensive porn movie ever made.

3. that made quite a scene when that movie first came out!
because it had some redeeming social value, it was shown at the regular movie houses (not the sleezy porn theaters where "X" rated movies were normally shown)and had guards posted out front so no young ones could get in. I will have to find a copy to rent (I doubt blockbuster has it) and check it out in a couple of weeks when the wife and kids are out of town for the weekend.

9. My friend and I snuck into it
At an early multiplex. We were going to see The Posiden Adventure, but being fifteen and very curious, and there being nobody at the door we ran in and hid our amongst the viewers, I had a stiffy for months.

13. I remember that a Penthouse pet of the year
was among the "stars" of the movie. It was one of the higher end porn I had seen at the time.

16. Blockbuster has it (One does, at least)
Just before a holiday (Labor day?) the Blockbuster at Montrose & Westheimer created a special section for "holiday viewing." You know, something to entertain friends & family over the long weekend. Caligula was on that shelf.

Neighborhood values!

5. I saw it in a theater in Krasnodar, Russia.
I went with some friends (three other women)...we had no idea what Caligula was. We thought it was some kind of historical drama and figured it would be interesting to see a movie in Russian.

We should have been tipped off by the fact that the audience was made up ENTIRELY of young soldiers in uniform.

8. It really is. I mean in this day and age, sex on TV isn't shocking
But this was...maybe because it was a good story, or an excellent cast, all of that mixed together made for one helluva movie.

10. Most of the hard-core scenes were added after the big-name stars had
completed their work. When Peter O'Toole and John Geilgud, among others saw or heard about what had been added after they picked up their checks, they went berserk. Can't say I blame them. 'Caligula' is an awful film; simply dreadful. I'm certainly no prude, and many of my objections have to do with the wildly inaccurate historical side. If you are going to make an historical film, make one; if you're going to make a porn film, make one. But don't pretend you're doing the one, while actually doing the other.

12. Why? It's their money. They can make whatever type of movie
they want. None of us have to watch it, and besides, even if we do, it gives people something to gripe about if they want to.

18. I saw it at the student cinema at Vanderbilt University.
There were a lot of jocks in the audience, I guess they heard this was going to be a porno flick.

We actually sat through the whole thing, just because I kept wondering how it could possibly get worse - and then it did.
