Guesses about Alexander? Is it going to suck or what?
Will it be exciting in the vein of Gladiator, with great action sequences? Will they be brave enough to put some of the gay in there? Will Colin Farrell prove once and for all that he can carry a movie?

Or! Will it be horrible in the vein of Troy? Will they completely strip all the gay out of the story in order to make it safe for American viewing? Will Colin Farrell prove that he's a pretty boy party animal whose eyebrows out-act him on a regular basis?

I'm hoping for the former, but guessing the latter...

3. After the first 10 minutes of that i was pretty sure
it was a satire, "Helen's run off...with the Trojans!"

9. I know! And I was so excited about it, too.
I love greek mythology and I was psyched for Troy. Obviously they were going to have to cut it down a LOT, but I was still hoping for some good action sequences. It was DULL!

11. My friend and i lost it after that line and we couldn't stop laughing
we waited in every new scene for the joke and were never let down. The end, oy, really capped it off.

You won't be disappointed. :)

35. He's being sued.
Greek lawyers are threatening to sue the makers of film epic Alexander for showing the ruler as bisexual. The lawyers, led by Yannis Varnakos, said it is "pure fiction and not a true depiction of Alexander's life", and want this made clear to cinema-goers. Colin Farrell, who plays the title role in Oliver Stone's new film, said: "Ambivalent sexuality was something of the times and part of the character". Director Stone said there was a historian on set to ensure accuracy. The film-maker added there was no question that the legendary ruler had "a polymorphous sensuality and was an explorer in the deepest sense of the word".

Further action

The lawyers have already requested that a credit is added to the start of the film to make it clear it is pure fiction. Warner Bros and Stone have not made any direct comment about the request.

Mr Varnakos added that their campaign is "not against gays", but have promised to take further action if it is not made clear that the film is fictional.

The thing is, there was no distinction between homosexuality and heterosexuality in ancient Greece. It was considered normal for men to go with both men and women, and as long as you played by the rules (set out by age and class) it wasn't looked down upon. The modern Greeks don't like it when people mention this. Paedophilia was also rampant in Ancient Greece, especially amongst the various armies.

5. It's going to totally suck.
Angelina Jolie is a talentless hack who ruins every film she's permitted to be in.

Besides that, I've noticed the new TV spots are full of "STUNNING" comments from reviews. Only they obscure the source.

If FOX 6 in Topeka thinks it's great -- and that's the best source you've got -- it sucks.

Just kidding. :) I disagree about Angelina but share your skepticism of the reviews they're showing in the previews now.

What is the one Angelina performance that will change my opinion about her?

31. Maybe Girl, Interrupted?
She was pretty good in that.

And I'm ashamed to say I rather like the Tomb Raider movies. :) I don't think they're IMPORTANT CINEMA, mind you, but I think they're entertaining and I think she does a good job, for what she's supposed to be doing.

She's certainly done her share of stinkers. That "romance" with her and Antonio Banderas was horrible. Also the one where her hair was blonde.

32. Okay, I'll give you that one.
But that was a fair way back in time. I expect progress! ;)

And I'll grant her grace for the Tomb Raider movies because they were supposed to be "larger than life" and exaggerated a bit.

But GOD, did you see, "Taking Lives"? "Beyond Borders"? "Sky Captain"?

She's on a roll in the wrong direction and needs to start choosing good projects and directors before she turns into Pamela Anderson or Anna Nicole. She's on the verge! LOL!

Maybe it's just a bad streak.

33. I didn't see the first two, they looked terrible.
I thought Sky Captain was horrible all the way through and actually preferred Angelina to the screeching mess that was Gwyneth Paltrow. Ugh!

She's very strange in her choices, though, I grant you that. Sometimes it seems she wants to do interesting projects and sometimes it seems she wants only fame and money. I think maybe she needs a better agent. :)

6. According to NYT, it is the first movie with a gay hero
review on Saturday.

One indication it is going to suck: trailers that have Alexander with a battle cry of "freedom", which leads me to believe that the movie is going to downplay the essential nature of Alexander as conqueror.

As in Troy, the movie can't have both the hero and the hero's actual motivation. Achilles's motivation becomes romantic love, instead of his real motivation, wrath. Will Alexander be the liberator of Medes, Bactrians and Egyptians from the despotic Persian king/

That's a RIOT!
BTW, my guess is "suck." I'm in the minority that does not like most of Stone's films. Angelina Jolie is boring and I don't even think she's as attractive as people say-her lips are FREAKY. And Colin Farrell-if this gay guy with a weakness for the Irish boys loathes him and thinks he's an obnoxious narcissist that needs the crap beaten out of him, 'nuff said.

I don't care for Colin Farrell to begin with, but that hair is impossible to get past.

I do like the preview shot with the elephant though, and I trust that little gay guy will kick the shit out of the republican!

23. Possibly.
I hope Oliver Stone plays it safe with the facts, but most filmmakers figure that audiences won't care if a few details get overlooked. Besides, these aren't documentaries, eh? :eyes:

As much as I liked JFK, Oliver Stone took a liberty or two with the facts.

24. I don't really care about the facts, so much.
I just want it to be ENTERTAINING! I don't mind if a fictional account of true events contains historical inaccuracies. I'm a philistine. I liked Armageddon, for god's sake.

My problem with Troy was that it was BORING.

It seems the quality of the movie varies in opposite proportion to the amount of hype piror to the movie's release.

Too bad. I love this Troy and Alexander ancient history stuff.

36. I'm just hoping the movie has beautiful scenery & costuming
and is beautifully made.

I thought "Out of Africa" was a breath-taking movie, and not for the plot, but for the beauty of the scenery and the costumes, etc.
