Irish rockstar Bono brought traffic to a standstill at the heart of New York on Monday, blasting out songs from U2's latest album as the band cruised down Broadway on a flatbed truck.

Office workers on their lunch-breaks whipped out their camera phones to catch the surprise appearance by the band whose album "How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb" is released in Britain on Monday and in the United States on Tuesday.

"I can't believe it. I have to call my mom right now," said one tourist in a crowd of hundreds as Bono sang Christmas favorite "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" in Times Square.

The stunt was filmed for the video of the forthcoming single "All Because of You" and the band was due to make another free appearance in Brooklyn later in the day.

10. It's alot like that impromptu concert
they gave about 20 years ago on a rooftop...I forget what city they were in but the cops eventually shut it down because they were causing major traffic problems

11. I don't get it, Why would they travel on a flatbread truck?
I wouldn't think that would be the easiest way to promote an album.

And a good falafel sandwich hits the spot.

16. First (and last) time I saw U2
was in 1980, at the Bayou in Washington, DC. Might've paid five bucks on a weeknight. Couple hundred people there at most. "I Will Follow" was getting a decent amount of FM play at the time.

Wanna know my reaction? Honest to God, I thought, "one-hit wonders."
