150 Hours Now Since My Last Cigarette
Still no shakes and my cravings are almost gone completely. I'm starting to be able to smell things again.

Yay! :)

Plus my teeth are de-yellowing. Always a plus!

I know this is pretty self-indulging, but maybe I'll give some hope to those out there who are seeking to quit as well. If I can do it, you can too!

4. Good for you!
Haven't had a cigarette in over 3 years, and nobody chain-smoked as heavily as I did in college.

8. thanks buddy
And yes, it's cold turkey. I thought it would be a lot harder than it has been. I don't want to jinx it and say I'll never crave it again, but right now, things are pretty smooth. :hi:

29. Gawd, me too. Stress = relapse.
I was fine for MONTHS. Then the election comes along... I start borrowing OP's ... next thing you know, I've bought a pack.

Good idea about the patches..

when that first crisis hit I never even thought about the patch idea - the election, well F*** it, if EVER there was a good reason to fall of the freaking wagon THAT WAS IT. :o

20. You can do it!!!
The first three days are hard, but after that, it gets easier. Get through the first three days by realizing you are addicted and the cravings are just from the nicotine talking. And nicotine is a big fat liar!!

10. It's so hard.
I chewed went thru a box of Nicorette gum a week for six months, and then sucked on those white plastic cigs for another six (that was two years ago), but not a puff since Sept. 2001. Good luck and be determined! I decided at that time that I wanted to be strong, and part of the solution, not the problem - sounds hokey, but I really felt it.

We were just chatting yesterday about how ridiculous it looks to have smoke coming out of the orifices in one's face.

Last week I hit my 6 week mark, and I never thought I'd be able to quit!
Keep it up. It really does get easier every day! Especially when you get your senses back! (smelling, tasting etc.)

health care costs. That's not the GOP way.

Congratulations, keep it up.

16. you know I was reading a book
that said the Phillip Morris is the No. 1 all-time contributor to the Republican Party. THAT alone should make everyone want to quit.

15. Hell, you are over the worst part now!!
Great job! It's been 10 months for me. That first week was hard, but I got through it by taking it an hour at a time the first 3 days, then a day at a time.

Pretty soon, you will start tasting food again and will realize what you've been missing (and just how HOT hot sauce is!!!) :toast:

17. I went from 2 packs a day to
nothing, cold turkey -- the only way to go! I'd already tried every other way. I just kept thinking, if I start again now, I will have gone through all that hell for nothing... and picturing what I could do with the extra cigarette money. I can actually breathe when I walk/hike again! It's so awesome. Wish I'd done it years ago. Another tip: Gum, Jolly Rancher candies, and a straw to imitate smoking/chew on when bad off... Hang tough - it's worth it!

21. You will always have cravings
But they will get easier and easier to control. I quit smoking 4 years ago, and still have cravings sometimes, but it was the best decision I ever made to quit.

22. So, be self-indulgent!
Edited on Mon Nov-22-04 10:23 PM by tuvor
My wife is just shy of two weeks after 27 years, and I'm closing in on 3 years after 13 years of smoking.

Once you're over the (very real) hump, you'll realize you're not missing anything at all. Come to think of it, I do keep my hands busy on DU a lot!

Congratulations, and remember to use any means at your disposal. Gum, patch, hypnotism...there are so many options nowadays.

ON EDIT: Don't forget alt.support.stop-smoking as well as a helpful phrase I found there: "One is too many, and a thousand is not enough."

;) But GOOD FOR YOU!!! Your willpower is winning one of the toughest battles, and that means YOU'RE AWESOME! Hats off to anyone who can quit smoking. My advice, less counting more distractions. But that's what DU is for, no? :)
