Let's start a commune!
See, we find an old summer camp and buy it! We can live in the cabins and eat in the lodge! We can plow up the activity field and grow our own food and fuel! We can raise livestock and use vegetable oil for warmth in the winter!

Eh? Eh?

2. Ew. All the people I know who live in communes are smelly.
And dirty.

Do I have to eat vegetables only and make things out of beads? And get in touch with my inner animal spirit? And wear hemp sandals? UGH! It's just too much! IT'S TOO MUCH!

4. Vegetables yes!
After they have marinated in the juices of animals we have battled with our bare hands! (or speared, I don't care)

5. Must. Have. Internets.
Then, I'm in.

Actually, the family farm is still in the family, and no one lives there now. But I don't know how well a commune would go down in rural Louisiana. :D

12. No seriously, I lived for a short time in a commune.

And they are what you decide they are going to be. Stinking bodies are not required, nor are whacky beliefs. The one where I stayed had 300 acres of land and 100+ people. They had their own hammock making business that paid for everything, and a tofu making business and publishing house too. Everybody was required to work. Drugs were actually pretty rare. Had computers for recreational use. Community buildings for entertainment, movies, etc. Grew most of their own food, including livestock. The food was all you can eat, anytime you want it. Awesome food. Had their own pond for swimming. The list goes on.

I would have changed some things, sure, but all in all it wasn't bad at all.

14. Nah, church hippies are the stinkiest!
As long as it wasn't camp crystal lake, i'm in...

I'm sure we could rig up some solar panel and brew ethyl alcohol and hemp oil for our energy needs.

Maybe someplace sunny... like... hmmm Jamaica?

15. I get the top bunk!!
I love camping. All this talk of growing food sounds like work. Where do I park my Hummer? also, it only gets 2 miles to the gallon, so I will need to put a pipeline in to the nearest Exxon/Mobile. Does the site have an unrestricted view of the SW sky, I need to bring up my Dish Network equipment and the 52 inch screen. Superbowl party in my tent. Also, does it snow much there. The reception is not great in the snow. I hope not. This sounds great, I can't wait.

22. Hee, the family farm really does exist.

:) It's about an hour and a half north of New Orleans. There are fields, a stream, and a TON of woods. No habitable buildings, though. Currently it's leased out to a local huntin' club. But, BOY, is it real backwoods Louisiana. All of my family is from there.

23. You people need to listen to yourselves. (big ol' rant comin')
Edited on Tue Nov-23-04 01:23 PM by chaska
First, it's pretty clear that most of us have not clue what a commune is, or can be. You'll have to forgive me, I'm pissed off for other reasons. I realize this is the lounge, where the 3 year olds hang out (not that everybody in the lounge....), but anybody who doesn't like the idea of living in a community - that actually is a community - where he lives in relative harmony with his fellow citizens, instead of this horrible, contentious amalgam we contend with on a daily basis, well, I wouldn't want you as a neighbour anyway.

Too many misconceptions of communes: Communes (a word we run away from, like 'liberal' - fuck that) are what you make them. They don't have to be pick-a-cliche. So drop the cliches and stop acting like ... okay, I didn't want to admit it, but it's true.... Someone wrote in a recent (post-election) article that the Dems really HAVE become elitists. IT'S FUCKIN' TRUE. I want you all to notice this behaviour in yourselves and others AND CALL THEM ON IT. You can bet your ass I will be.

These comments don't apply to everyone above. Obviously.

Edited to add the 'U' to my American words. I'm moving to Canada. The devil can have this place.
