2. I've noticed a lot of them quote scripture.
It's like a contest to be the most religious.

3. I don't mind them.
I'm in frequent contact with my siblings and parents anyway, but it's still nice to get the letters. And from relatives I don't hear from that often, I enjoy getting updates.

I should say, though, that I've never received one that was really banal (potty training updates??), nor have I received one that was really braggy. If I had a bunch of smirking braggarts for relatives, I'd probably toss the letters without reading them.

4. I think its funny that people get worked up about them...
So it's a note that isn't custom to you. It is better than nothing, which is probably what they would get otherwise...

5. Note from last year...
I actually received a Christmas letter from an old friend where he talked about how proud he was of his oldest son. The son was beginning to form his own opinions and have independent thought on political issues and that he watched the O'Reily Factor religiously.
:wtf:

I am not a fan of Christmas Letters. They are impersonal at best and provide too many opportunities for people to thank Jesus for everything they have. If my wife writes one this year, I told her I was putting a paragraph in about how * stole the fricking election and that the religious right was destroying our great country.

6. I love reading about my family and friends
WTF. Maybe I am nuts, but I adore my friends and family. I am too busy to speak with them often, but I deeply love them and wish I had more time to do so. The annual letter keeps me up to date on some trivial, but mostly meaningful things. I got a letter two weeks ago that touched me deeply. It was from a close friend (one of the non-blood cousins, child of my parents' close friends). I learned all about her husband's difficult year and how the triumphed through personal difficulties together. I enjoyed reading it.

Maybe I am strange, but I wish more people did the annual newsletter.

8. poor excuse for poor communication
As a realtor, I get them all the time. I hate em. It keeps people from writing personalized letters. But then, so does the internet.

I hate that too...

Why do I love what I hate?

9. i would rather hear nothing at all; they always go something like this
"Hello everyone! I can't believe it's that time of the year already; it seems like I was just typing this letter yesterday (how time flies)! This year, little Johnny learned how to use the big kids potty all by himself; but not without a few "mistakes" (we had to dip into his college fund to pay for new carpeting). But alas, our favorite kitty, Mrs. Tinkerbell McCuteypants, went to kitty heaven, and everyone took it quite hard. But we made loads and loads of lemon drop cookies, and i think that helped to ease the pain (but it sure didn't help with my new year's resolution!). we are so blessed to have such a wonderful family; and hope that you and yours are enjoying the best that God's season has to offer.

Hugs and Kisses,

The Dingleberrys"

10. I don't mind if they aren't bragging
but we have one friend who sends one every year that we can't wait to receive. Usually something like "We were a little disappointed when Buffy only scored 76 soccer goals in the state championship game, but her 4.8 GPA, being class valedictorian, prom queen, and humanitarian of the year reminded us what is really important blah blah blah. It guess it's so bad that it's funny.

11. My wife writes one every year
but it's satirical and funny -- really a sort of parody of Christmas letters, so I don't mind.

12. My parents & I were joking about this the other day
They were talking about sending out one about our family's year to everyone who sends an annoying one to them. Then maybe they'd never get one again in return. :D

13. I do one each year
I try to put in lots of photographs -- stuff that happened during the year

Not everyone on our card list gets them -- just family and friends-like-family. :) It works for us because we moved three states away from my really large family. This way everyone gets updated pictures and I don't have to spend a mint.

14. We do one every year. We get drunk on thanksgiving and write it.
No bragging, (how crass) no god (we are atheists) and we make fun of ourselves a lot, cuz we are geeks.
