Elitists Check in
I was reading the Atlantic the other day, at my urban townhouse. The wife took the Volvo over the organic market to pick up some dinner. I was enjoying a very nice Pommard (the region has really made a wonderful comeback, I suggest you try one) and was just reflecting on my elitism. Which I've decided I'm eminently proud of.

So check in, fellow snobs and elitists. Show your pride.

8. Liberal elitist here
I am drinking bottled spring water while eating a bean curd salad in my converted loft apartment in an all white yuppie neighborhood just close enough to the negroes to show I care.
I might spend the rest of my day making fun of Christians and anyone dumb enough to live in 'flyover country'.

12. Sorry, but I drink red wine, not white.
And we only eat organic meat, not veggies. And my wife drives a Toyota.

I'd like to be an elitist, but I just can't take that last step.

13. Just received my new membership cards yesterday...
...from the Guggenheim Museum, to go along with all my other Museum and cultural organization memberships.

Tonight, I may deign to attend a preview screening of the new Kevin Spacey film if I feel up to it (but I don't know...it's called "Splish Splash"--a "biopic," as the hoi polloi would say--with Spacey as Bobby Darin, and doesn't seem high-brow enough for an elitist like moi).

Can we all say "slumming?"

Toodles!

14. Question: What's the difference between an elitist and an
intellectual snob? I always figured an elitist had to have money, but an intellectual snob could be rich or poor.

Also, I've always associated elitists with the right wing, and intellectuals (snob or not) with the left.

Can someone set me straight on this?

17. I think only stupid and ignorant people voted for Bush.
Actually I just think that there are alot of people who are stupid, and alot of people who choose to remain ignorant because they can't be bothered with the truth. I also pride myself on doing my best to not be stupid or ignorant, so I guess I'm an intellectual snob.

22. Help me out here; I'm so confused!
If I went to community college and graduated with highest honors, various awards, etc. then I'm an intellectual, but not a snob, right?

If I then went to a prestigious, expensive private university and kept a perfect GPA, but I'm going to be paying off the student loans for a LOOOONG time, and my degree is for teaching elementary school, then I'm an intellectual, but am I a snob?

I'm pretty sure I'm not an elitist; been middle class most of my life, and even spent some time below poverty level, which gave me a whole new respect for the poor. I don't like most wealthy people simply because the ones I see around here are right wing nut jobs. I've come to associate elites with republicans. It seems that "Democrat" and "elite" are incompatible terms, even if the Democrat is wealthy...

Anyway, what makes a person a snob? If I'm proud of my educational accomplishments, but I don't think I'm better than anyone else because of them, am I a snob?

I know this thread is just for fun, but I'm really curious about how these terms are defined!

23. I'm lower middle class, and don't really have a Volvo
But I do like wine, and and I do have a graduate degree. I think the basic criterion for being an elitist as I meant it here is:

Did you vote for Bush? If not, then you must be an elitist snob.

24. I aspire to be one, I think. But not if I have to be snobby and not watch
Spongebob Squarepants.

I would die for an urban townhouse and a Volvo. Um, okay, not a Volvo. A Jaguar.

I'm still WAY to poor to qualify.
And sometimes the Atlantic (and good goober, the New Yorker!) is B-O-R-I-N-G.

But I do enjoy fine wines, cappucinos, green tea ( ;) ) and thinking.

27. Can we add a category called "eccentric intellectual"?
Edited on Tue Nov-23-04 04:04 PM by Frogtutor
See, if we were elite, we could call ourselves "eccentric" and get away with things like watching Spongebob! Yeah, that's what I wanna be!
