my mum found my brother dead

I just got a screaming phone call - she found him dead in his house, blood everywhere. Not sure if it was suicide or if he drank himself to death. Glenn was 48, eleven months older than me. He lived in Illinois (I am in Texas).

I am devastated and trying to figure out what to do. I don't feel well enough to travel, just getting over what I think may have been the flu. Don't know what to do, I feel paralyzed. I asked her to have my younger brother Terry call me (he is still at the house).

When my brother was found dead in July 2001 I had just started a new job the DAY BEFORE , so I had worked there TWO DAYS. I got the phone call after work (my sister did not want to call me on my cell at work).

The only decision I could make was to go back to Springfield, Illinois and be with my family.

So, two days after beginning a new job I called from the train en route to Springfield, IL. These people didn't know whether I was bluffing or not (WHO would do such a thing as LIE about the death of a family member? ICK!).

However, having worked in the insurance business for many years, I knew that I should cover myself. I had the funeral director write a note as proof that I was out of town on a funeral. It seemed routine on his part because he had a form for such a thing.

I was gone a week. I returned to work with note in hand and as depressed as I had ever been. No questions were asked. I wasn't paid for the time (except the three days funeral leave) but I also did not lose my job.

my brother Terry says the coronor is 98% sure Glenn died of liver failure - he was jaundiced - and the blood was from an uncontrollable nosebleed. What a sad end. Terry and I both were glad it wasn't suicide (our dad killed himself) even though we know his alcoholism was a form of slow suicide.

if you have to fly, tell them you need a bereavement fare, and American at least will help you any way they can.

I just had to do this when my mom died and the last minute fare of $1200 per ticket was reduced miraculously to $321 per ticket with an open date so if we needed to stay longer, we could have.

I am sure Delta and others are as accomodating. So if you need to fly, call the airlines, (you can't do this over the internet, you have to talk to a live person, and youhave to have the name of the funeral home and its phone number )

364. Sympathy and Regret

Upon reading your post, I remembered my response to the news that a car crash had taken the lives of my father and grandmother, and given my mother and uncle nearly-fatal injuries.

There is nothing to describe the absolute emptiness one feels when they are confronted with the fragility of existence, and no amount of sympathy cards can bridge that void - although, they're wonderful examples of human kindness.

From one person who has experienced great loss to another: please, do yourself a favor and give yourself some time off. It's necessary to embrace the pain of loss as part of life's design; to learn to understand it rather than fear it, and confront your problems head-on.

I offer what little my condolences can give, and the support of a fellow DUer who knows this particular flavor of pain all too well.

I hope you're all able to quickly move past the trauma of finding your brother that way. It's so difficult to lose a brother. Mine died 6 years ago from a long bout with cancer.
