Favorite Eric Clapton number, solo or band |
|
though the latter only makes sense if he's singing, or at least really, really prominently featured.
My number one is still "Badge," co-written by and featuring L'Angelo Mysterioso, aka Layla's first husband. To my tin ear, that sounds like Eric singing; if it's actually Jack Bruce, that's ok, too.
As to solo stuff, I prefer "I Can't Stand It," cuz I'm a sucker for the sustained crescendo, and "Promises." Yes it's true, there is one person who liked "Spineless,"-- I mean "Backless."
Of EC's other band material, my knowledge is incomplete. There's the D & the Ds cover of "Little Wing," their "Bell Bottom Blues," and that song about Mrs. Harrison-- what was it called again?
You?

"Badge" rules.
I like Cream better than anything else he ever did.
I also really like "Let It Rain," and the first side of D&D.

Cream-wise, I like "Tales of Brave Ulysses", though I like pretty much everything he did up until the mid-90s.

5. "Layla," Derek & The Dominoes. |
|
Yeah, I know: Classic Rock radio has played it to death, but I don't care. To my ears, "Layla" is an intoxicatingly gorgeous piece of music, all 7:10 of it! :loveya:

22. I can't find any evidence that Clapton played on this, |
|
but if you know he did, I defer to your greater knowledge. The other two Wilburys were Tom Petty and Jeff Lynne.

8. Does L'Angelo go by another name perhaps? |
|
Hubby's favorite Clapton -- "If" with Waters live on Pros and Cons tour and/or 7:45 a.m. Go Fishing - Pros and Cons album, he did not have to be Clapton on that tour, just the guitar player in the band. He just plain rocked!
As a solo -- I love "The Core".

Badge has something unique, and didn't suffer the overexposure of Layla. Bell-bottom Blues is hard to beat.

From 'Layla', which is helped immensely by the presence of Duane Allman.
Or "Further On Up The Road" from the 'The Last Waltz', aided by Robbie Robertson. Clapton is better when being pushed, whether by his bandmates in Cream, or the 2 collaborators mentioned here.
Also, I think his only 2 good albums since 'Slowhand' are 'Unplugged' and 'From The Cradle', a blistering blues set, both early 90's albums.
He HATED playing on 'Pros And Cons' by the way. Waters actually wanted Billy Gibbons of ZZ Top to do it, but Gibbons was too busy with Top at the time to break away. He did like the music more than Clapton did, who said it was 'turgid'. Gibbons said it sounded like "Pink Floyd on Mars", and was hip to it.
