Youth Soccer Referee Beaten By Coach
<snip>

RICHMOND, Calif. -- A youth soccer referee who was beaten bloody by a coach said he will press charges against his attacker.

Bruce Greenlee, 59, said he suffered cuts on his face Saturday when the coach punched and kicked him after he questioned whether a player was eligible for the tournament for 8- and 9-year-olds.

Greenlee said he forfeited the game to the opposing team after the Richmond coach was unable to produce a player card, which includes a picture and a date of birth, for the boy in question.

The coach followed Greenlee to the scoreboard, where the two exchanged words before the coach punched and kicked the referee in the head, authorities said.

Police have sent their findings from the investigation to prosecutors, police Lt. Daniel Adams said Tuesday. The coach, whose name has not been released, could face a misdemeanor charge of assaulting a referee, which carries up to a year in jail, authorities said.

1. Great way to teach those kids sportsmanship!

Sports has gone the way of society. Both are pretty much out of control. Agressive behavior is awarded and encouraged, and rules are just obtacles to work your way around. The wonderful lessons and skills which sports used to include have gone by the wayside.

I've been a sports fan my whole life, and I recently feel i'm losing my taste for it. Am I just getting old or what? I'm 43.

I stopped watching the NBA years ago, after Rodman turned it into a sideshow and the games got essentially boring. Admittedly, I was never a big fan.

I have often said that the true Florida was lost, when hockey made it's way south. Any game that encourages fighting is bullshit. How can someone stand next to their 6-yr old kid and yell "kill him", while the guy beats the other one in the face? What signal is that sending? People say "that's part of the game". I say that's a bunch of crap, because games don't include criminal behavior and thuggery.

Don't get me started on the NFL. The No-longer Football League. Now it's just an excuse to advertise fifty kinds of new pick-up trucks to a bunch of beer-swilling morons.

That's it, I'm done. Anyone for a game of bocce or darts?

2. Nimrod
How was this guy ever approved to coach a youth soccer team in the first place? You'd think there would have been some sort of indication that he was a little bit unstable.
