I found it particularly ironic for the hotel key card at one of the hematology conferences to have an ad for EPO. (for those that don't know anything about that world, EPO aka "Procrit" has been implicated in a bunch of athlete doping scandals)
Sue swears that the drug companies must send people to the conferences, looking to find (and then rent) any blank surfaces that don't yet have advertising on them. Every day we would emerge from our room, to a new pile of flyers and stickers. Apparently (I just tag along to these things) the shuttle busses have "antimacassars" on the seats that bear advertising, etc.
After years of academic math conferences that attract maybe 500 people, and have a one room exhibit hall filled mostly with textbook companies, to the medical conferences with 30,000+ attendee's, an exhibit hall close to one mile in length, and invatations to private shows with Shamu the whale. (She is still doing math, but now in the form of statistics for medical research. So she winds up going to a bunch of medical conferences, as the projects tend to schedule meetings in conjunction with them) I suppose it could be even sillier, it could be Comdex. (a think I have so far avoided, thank god)
