I'm 30, and I still hide my smoking habit from my mother. |
|
I'm going home to Pittsburgh this evening for the Thanksgiving holiday, and I made sure to stop and pick up a bottle of Febreeze to cover up the smoky smell on my clothes. Anyone else here hiding vices from their folks?

My mother is over 50 and she hides her smoking from her mother, who is in her late seventies.
I don't smoke. Tobacco, anyway.

2. If you can ever find it, Garrison Keillor has a great "Tales From Lake |
|
Wobegone" tape about children coming home for the holidays...stubbing out the last cigarette five miles away and so on. You just made me think of it. If you can find it, you'll giggle your way all the way home. :hi: Safe trip.

If you don't want her to know, deep down, you probably don't want to be doing it.

you will eventually get it and feel oh so much better in many ways. I NEVER wanted to quit, I loved smoking. I got really good at sneaking it because everyone thought I had quit. This was many years ago. I had a real problem when my brother was ill, it threw me over the deep end and I started up just briefly. Get some of those lozenges, they work but then they are hard to get off of but you can do it. You might want to give them a try while visiting. Then you will know if they help or not and they are too expensive to throw away so you might just use them up and then think about really giving it up.

...but each time you try you're closer to the time that will work. My best friend tried to quit a million times and I really thought she was hopeless, but she finally did it. It's been almost a year.
I quit 6 years ago, with a month long relapse after 9/11/01. :(

(or tries to) from all of us. It doesn't work very well. She was going in for a triple bypass a few years ago, and when asked if she smoked, she told them no. My stepdad pulled the nurse to the side and told her the truth.

I don't hide it from my family anymore, but I still go out of my way not to smoke around them. I'm 34 and have been smoking since I was 19.

9. Don't forget the scented lotion! |
|
Just after washing your hands, it's good to use some nice lotion, and run it through your hair quickly.
Hair is always the giveaway, in my experience. :D

10. you should just quit! ;) |
|
My husband and I smoked for years, we quit for good when our kid was born 8 years ago. I still miss clove cigarettes, though, every now and then. Although not smoking makes it hard to tolerate clubs, I can tell you.
I haven't hidden anything from my parents since high school. My mom is from the "you need at least one vice" school. :)

14. I hide my smoking habit from my mother, too |
|
She knows about it, but it upsets her if she can smell it on my clothes (which is a gross smell anyway) or see it. I walk around the block and use Febreeze and cologne when I'm around her. Just courtesy. Why would I upset her if I didn't have to? Is walking around the block to smoke a cigarette really that much to ask?

19. Having semi-recently puffed my last ciggy, I've come to a conclusion |
|
All of those people I thought I was fooling? No way in hell I was actually doing it. Now that my sense of smell has come back, I can tell a smoker from three arm lengths away -- and it really does stink.
Not only that, but I've had to pull clothing out of my closet and re-wash it. Towels, sheets, blankets, curtains and a whole bunch of other stuff too. Even tho I was only smoking in my bathroom with the window open, my entire house smelled like an ashtray. The scent sticks to your clothing and to everything else around you.

of things I don't miss about smoking. I always had to hide it from my parents too, especially my dad (his dad died from smoking).
Whoo hoo, 11 months smoke-free now and just getting better. You should try it!

I used to smoke and was home visiting my dad. I was so ashamed, I would hide out in my old bedroom and smoke by the window. Finally, my dad said, y'know, if you want to smoke pot in the house, it's really ok with me. I told him I wasn't smoking pot, I was smoking cigarettes. He said, what, are you an idiot?
