41. Manhattan, to be precise
Only Marin County folk call San Fran "The City" (complete with capital letters and quotation marks when they say it). Folks I've met who live in Frisco don't seem to mind it.

6. Well, I was born in San Francisco and
spent 18 years of my life there, so I just chalk it up to jealousy and character defects whenever I see or hear that. I doubt I really handle it all that well, but it does seem to calm me down a bit!

28. Cherryperry, hope you don't mind but I thought this would be a fun thread
...in which to mention to the DU community that we used to be neighbors (but didn't know it until we met here).

Yep folks, we used to share a view of each other through the back windows...errr, that is to say, we very nearly shared the same backyard. Ah, the small world syndrome strikes again!

:hi:

Cherryperry, I promise that I never looked into your windows. Really! I didn't...

16. Not a native, but I live here
I hate it when people use "Frisco". It's silly, but it just annoys. I use SF or San Fran or The City if I don't want to call it San Francisco. BTW, it's really incredible here today. Sunny, about 75 F. I can see just a hint of fog off the coast, but it'll probably go away.

Hmm...I'll go see if I can take a picture. I'll post if anyone's interested...

20. Errr ... no one
OK ... no one who's actually BEEN to San Francisco.

As stated a number of times above, the correct abbreviation is, "The City".

The 16 years I previously spent in San Jose on the other hand, were known as, "The Sewer".

26. Really? "The Sewer"?
I always think of San Jose as a much more stressful place than San Francisco but it's not without it's charms. To tell the truth though, I don't spend too much time south of SFO; more of Marin, Napa, Sonoma, etc. guy myself. :D

42. I've been there many times
Had relatives who lived there; been stationed up there, visited there with ships...
AND
numerous natives of San Fran called it Frisco. To my face. Even after hearing I was from L.A.
And if you go anywhere but Northern CA, "The City" is Manhattan.

You know, San Fran reminds me of Boston...the big city on the coast that got passed up by other cities, and resents it. The glory days aren't quite there anymore, and when you realize you've been left behind, you get cranky.

34. I honestly don't get this issue.
my brother moved up there about 10 years ago from the Los Angeles area and he now tells us we are basically uncultured embiciles and gets pissed if we don't refer to his new home the way he prefers: SAN FRANCISCO. He obviously forgot where he spent the first 35 years of his life.

I say Frisco or San Fran just to piss him off. Normally I wouldn't do that because when we were kids my Dad always made a big deal out of saying the correct name of a place he refused to call Los Angeles -L.A. etc. So we just never shortened names of places (I don't know why my dad hated that so much) If my brother wouldn't make such a snobby deal out of it I would refer to it as he prefered. but HELL NO.

Speaking of which.. I am driving up there tomorrow morning - I hope they'll let me in :-)
