Rush Limbo declaws his cats
Despicable!

http://www.rushlimbaugh.com/home/daily/site_091903/content/stack_c.guest.html

We have three cats, my friends, and I will admit publicly before the people of this country that all three of them have been declawed. It was a painless process for them. It's called drugs. In fact, it was probably more painful for Marta than it was for the cats. She had to baby-sit for a week after they got home, not to mention the whole starving-before-surgery business. That was the toughest part.

3. Yikes! Rush has cats?! Poor cats.
What's he doing with cats? Usually, fascist control freaks hate and fear cats (Hitler, for instance, and then there's Asscroft and the calicos).

Poor kitties.

5. It was painless?>

Did they tell him that?

He should have just said, "We declawed our cats. I recognize there is a potential they could have problems in the future, especially if the procedure wasn't done right, but I don't want them scratching on my furniture and I could give them a good life, but can only do so if I declawed them."

I have two cats...Neither have or ever will be declawed. Cats come with claws. They are indoor cats, but if they ever do get out I want them to have protection they were made with.

13. I AM a cat lover
and all of my cats will be declawed. Yes, it hurt the first time they jumped off the bed , but i tried to help them on more stressful moves.
Did not last a week.
I do NOT let my cats outside. and they were all happy as clams because i could stand to have them on my lap while petting them. and none of them had any trouble stratching themselves. and even without claws, they did the scratching thing. One loved books. another likes the speaker.
declawing is not the end of the world.

living with rush, that could be. poor cats.

16. Working w/ big cats...

Big cats that have been declawed ultimately develop problems in their paws.

My wife's mother-in-law has cats that are declawed and they are all old. One walks around like its feet are burned. I have tried to get close to him to see if I can figure out where his pain is, but whenever I touch his feet he runs.

What I am saying is...There is a chance their elder years won't be as pleasant as they could be. Again...Id rather cats live with compassionate owners w.o claws than people who mistreat them.

From my perspective...My cats will keep their claws. We monitor them very well. I've had both my for 5 years now and I have two big speakers and they are both in good shape. I have 3 scratching posts located about and a bottle of water when they go for the furniture.

The worst that could happen is eventually the cats will nail the sofa enough times to ruin it (times we aren't there) at which time Ill spend the money for a new sofa or get that one fixed, BUT...I can't do that to my cats.

17. I feel sorry for your cats
It is equilavent to removing half of a human's toe. A cat's claw is not necessarily a nail, it is a movable digit attached to muscle much like a finger, without this your cat won't be able to properly grasp, , hold or establish proper footing for running, walking, climbing, etc. There was this one time that a cat's foot become severly infected afer he had been declawed that the cat's foot had to be amputated. If you just declawed a cat so you can pet him while he or she is on your lap maybe you should of thought about a scatching post? Sometimes I wish cats are able to make decisions that affect their body on their own.

34. The cats I've had in my life
never, ever used a scratching post. They all preferred the furniture. I've had thousands of dollars worth of furniture destroyed. Now I have a dog.

I tried the water squirting thing. It only works when you're there to watch. I've seen the little things you glue on their claws. I can only imagine the healing time of my wounds after trying to put them on my cat, or the expense of having the vet do it every month or so.

I love cats, but my dogs have never destroyed my furniture and they were easy to train not to do it.

scratching furniture etc...From kittens I trained them not to scratch things and maybe I've just been lucky, but they are fine...But I'm not criticizing you for your choice....We all do what we think is right....I just feel cats were meant to have claws....

27. ...I just feel cats were meant to have claws....

Yup...Precisely why they were born with them.

Of course, I am sure some company is working on the gene to have cats born clawless and then we'll have so many cats w/ claws where we would have to send Ted Nugent out to shoot them all.

At press time both my cats are resting up so they can run all over my bed about the time I go down to sleep.

8. I didn't realize how cruel
declawing was until my sister, a vet, told me that declawing is basically the equivalent of removing the first joint of our fingers. Since then, I haven't been able to stand the idea.

29. Which is crueler....
declawing a cat so that it can be exclusively an indoor cat, or leaving it whole and outside where a wide variety of hazards exist?

We've got one cat that's 10 years old and is a front-declawed indoor only cat. His last living litter mate died 6 years ago (we keep in touch with the people we got him from). They were all outdoor cats, fully clawed. We couldn't have kept him if he wasn't declawed because of our lease/landlord at the time. He's fat, healthy and happy, while his brothers and sisters are all dead.

If he was able to make the choice, I'd think he'd prefer to be declawed and alive instead of clawed and dead.

11. Seems his style
This seems appropriate for him~ insanely cruel and hateful. I feel so sad for him that having his cats' toes amputated was inconvenient for the family. My two lovely fur-babies are completely indoor cats and I wouldn't dream of declawing them. Seriously, if your furniture is more important than your pet, then don't have animals.

30. I have an interesting story.
For many years, I worked writing about television. I worked with the commercial networks and if you read in your local newspaper what Jessica Fletcher was up to this week or the reason that you had to tune into this week's The Simpsons, that was probably me. My main contact for CBS News was a lovely woman named Donna, who was also Dan Rather's publicist. We became very friendly. Then, I had it on very good authority that, in her personal life, she was seeing none other than Rush Limbaugh! Can you imagine?! No, don't try! I just never had the courage to bring this up with her. He must have been between wives at the time.:puke:

Before you feel sorry for or judge poor Donna, she found someone else, left CBS, got married and had a baby. She saw the light, but I don't know how she feels about cats.:-)

14. It's a very cruel thing to do to a cat...
Some cats never fully recover and their paws are sore and tender for the rest of their lives. It also has an impact on their psyche because they suffer anxiety over the fear of not being able to climb trees to escape predators. Many vets refuse to do it. I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that some areas in Ca. have banned it altogether.
On a similar subject, some people have their dogs voice box removed to stop incessant barking. Wynnona Judd had this done to her dog, I know this for a fact.

19. Someone did it to my dog
before I had her. She was "de-barked". They do this by jamming a metal rod down the throat of the dog to snap the vocal cords. I don't think they did it right anyway, because she just sounds like a dog that smokes 2 packs a day when she barks. She's loud, that's for sure. BUT, she is terrified of so many people because she was so abused...it's hard because I think she's getting cataracts and can't identify people...it really makes her edgy.

21. Oh God! How horrible!
Dogs are such wonderful, trusting creatures and people who can do things like that to living things really piss me off. One of my mother's dogs is a rescue that had one of his eyes kicked in when he was five weeks old. He is such a sweet dog! My mother has worked with a local rottweiller (sp?) rescue and she has seen some pretty awful things done to dogs. Like the rottie who had his tail docked with a steak knife.

26. Happy to see CA is starting to ban it
More states need to look into banning the practice.

Here's a partial list of countries in which declawing cats is either illegal or considered extremely inhumane and only performed under
extreme circumstances.
England
Scotland
Wales
Italy
France
Germany
Austria
Switzerland
Norway
Sweden
Netherlands
Northern Ireland
Ireland
Denmark
Finland
Slovenia
Portugal
Belgium
Spain
Brazil
Australia
New Zealand
Yugoslavia
Israel
Japan

I hate when I find reasons to be embarrassed of the United States. :(

18. I didn't do it, I promise
but we rescued an older de-clawed cat from the animal shelter. She was very timid. We cannot teach her to not shread papers, preferably homework that is due the next day. The Humane society says this is not uncommon in de-clawed cats. They tend to have some behavioral problems. Mine's a sweeties, very affectionate, but she sure does love the homework papers or sometimes tax forms. Sigh.

28. Declawing is better than homelessness
If you're an apartment renter, it's easier to find a place with declawed cats than cats who are not.

As for the drama of the surgery--he must have had them done when they were grown up, which isn't good--kittens bonce back, grown-up cats don't.

It's better to not have them declawed, but for some it's not an option.

31. Declawing is tantamount to cutting off the first knuckle of a human hand..
It is painful, it remains painful, the cat cannot cannot use its paws properly (have you ever seen a declawed cat try to grab something, like a string? She catches it in her "wrists," and drags it up to her mouth). It is well documented by various veterinary centers that numerous behavioral problems occur subsequent to declawing.

Leave it to Rush to do something outmoded and cruel to defenseless animals.

32. I have three cats...
... and can not bring myself to declawing them.

I have been tempted, though. Not too long ago, I bought a brand new living room set. They went right after the chair. Had to chase them away quite a few times.

I tried a several things to save my furniture. I used a spray bottle with water as a disciplinary tool. But they're often too sneaky. Next, I used the anti-cat scratch spray that smells like Froot Loops and is supposed to keep them from scratching. Bought it at PetCo. Didn't work.

I then went back and bought some tape strips. It's double-sided tape that goes over the edges of the furniture (where they like to scratch) and keeps them from attacking (they dont' like sticky paws). It worked better, but looks terrible after a while.

Also got one of those floor-to-ceiling cat climbing posts. It's okay. They play on it occasionally.

The best solution I came up with only cost me $5.00. I bought one of those cardboard cat scratching boxes at the grocery store, and let me tell you -- the best $5 I ever spent on those cats! The love it! Totally keeps them away from the furniture (except to sleep on it). I keep it refreshed with either catnip or the catnip-scented spray. The best distraction imaginable.

A $5 box that saved almost $2000 worth of furniture? Works for me!

Also, buy a claw clipper at your vet. Keeps the claws from getting long and snarly. Clip their claws every few months.

Now, if only I can find a way to get them from screwing around behind my computer desk. Messing up all the wires!
