OK- we spent Thanksgiving by ourselves - are we evil? |
|
Edited on Thu Nov-25-04 08:26 PM by DancingBear
We were both exhausted from election work (I spent time in Ohio), constant plane flights to New England to check on the house we're buying, getting our house ready to sell, etc. We didn't want to fly to Florida to see my family, and the 5 hour drive to NC to see Mrs. DB's family would have taken forever with traffic.
So we stayed at home and rested. Mid-afternoon, we went to a Thanksgiving buffet at a local restaurant and had great (vegetarian) food.
We really enjoyed the day together - very relaxing.
Are we bad for "stepping away" from the family this time?

I made the choice to spend Thanksgiving alone and I am glad. It was a nice, relaxing day.

We were going to go to see the brother in law in Ft. Worth but illness prevented it. Actually, we prefer eating with our neighbors. You'd have liked it, as vegetarian fare is always available (I make a good tasting saag).

After the hurricanes, the election letdown and other money woes, we were happy to just stay home and gobble our own turkey. Plus the dogs and cat loved slouching around the house. The drive isn't worth it!

My husband had to work, got off at about 2:30 or 3:00 and had to be back at work at 7:00. We had invited a friend and her son over, but he got sick, so it was just the three of us. Nice, and quiet.

6. Did that last year, but...... |
|
my in-laws are 10 min away so we had to lie, and say we were going to a friends who just bought a house for the day.
A GREAT DAY!!!!!! My wife is a wonderful cook, while her mother is not- she burns the brown and serve rolls EVERY F'N YEAR!!!! Everything is right out of the box, and table talk is nieces junior high, high school sports :P
So this year we went, yes burnt rolls, Stove top stuffing, instant mashed potato's, Mrs Smiths pies, but turkey was moist for a change. The coach is teaching them new plays for basketball.......
My parents & family all live 1500 miles away, and wife has to always work day before and day after. Well my parents live nearby, buy winter in AZ where my brother and sisters live.
Going home for a GOOD dinner now. Smoked salmon, homemade bread, wine (and prob more wine!).

8. No. That hardly makes you evil. |
|
Not evil at all.
I miss my family like crazy, and I miss our huge, noisy gatherings, but I am coming to cherish the Thanksgivings I have spent with just my husband and our children.

over to spend Thanksgiving with his family. Long story but in a nut shell I refuse to subject myself to their not always so subtle ridicule and never ending (yuk-yuk :eyes: ) chastisements because I am, 1) a Liberal, 2) A bush HATING Liberal, and the biggie *gasp* 3) I don't believe in god.
Just because it's a "holiday" doesn't mean I have to fore-go my own boundaries to make "them" feel happy, whole and gee every thing is just hunky-dory in their perfect little world. Fuck That!
And totally guilt free about it too :-) My son and I enjoyed our dinner

11. No, I just got done doing dishes for nine people. After I cooked the |
|
whole damn meal. I'm jealous. And tired.
I wish I had done the same, just my son and myself.

12. Why are you the only one doing the dihes then? |
|
Sounds like what I used to do. Next year, make someone else do it or eat out! :)

14. They all had things to do afterwards. The only one who stuck around |
|
was my brother and he had is baby daughter.
Next year this turkey won't be making dinner for anyone, unless it's my son and myself.

13. I still fix enough for 8 or 10 people |
|
Never know who might show up, but dang there aren't many dishes afterwards and that is a nice bonus. Not to mention no beer bottles and cans to pick up everywhere or overflowing ashtrays, etc. ;-)
