My new iMac G5 was delievered from China this past Monday, and now I'll be more than happy to share my review and notes about it here.
Naturally I knew that any G5 based Mac woulld kick ass. But until now, I've only used the store models--usually stock models without anything extra beyond the usual software installed. So I was very excited unpacking my iMac G5..and a little nervous. You see, Apple has a new file trasnfer method in the Setup Assisant. Simply connect a Firewire cale with the iMac G5 and a Firewire equiped Mac, and boot up the older Mac n Target disk mode (hold down the T key). I kept saying, can it really be that simple and harmless? Don't I have to do SOMETHING beyond a few mouse clicks? Right...?
Nope  I only had to type in my ISP's log in info and password, a couple of ose clicks, and that's it. When the file transfer was done in about 40 minutes, the screen said,"ok you're ready to go and enjoy! have fun" And I'll be damned if the screen, files, and apps were exactly like how I had them on my iMac DV! I got online, checked my email, fired up Safari, logged into DU ofc ourse...the speed is very much noticeable. The iMac G5 hadnles web browsing and email like asnack cake!In fact, the slowest app to launch is Safari. iPhoto just screams, no more ,"how long will it take to scroll through these photos?" The DVD player is sweet--I rented The last Samurai from Blockbuster, and you can stop the dvd and select to resume from the same spot you stopped from last time! The sound is very nice, externals would be even better if you like a deep bass sound. and synching with iTunes and iCal and the iPod is almost light speed fast.
I brought th 17 inch 1.6 G5 combo drive model. I selected to have Apple add more memroy, so I have 512 MB right off the bat. I have updated to 10.3.6 with no problems, and no noie issues--it makes my previous Macs seem loud like jetliners. If you need a new Mac this Christmas or whenever you can bu one, the iMac G5 will do more than fine. It's digital Nirvana :bounce:
