Today is “Support Your Foreign Sweatshop Day” |
|
Just remember, as you sally forth with credit card in hand, most of the products lining those department stores shelves were made in sweatshops by underpaid women and children.
So, let’s not let the system down… as you rush to pick up that special sweater to express your love for that special person--remember, you’re not only expressing love, you're expressing oppression.
Have a great shopping day!

I know some folks say what's the point in boycotting Walmart or Home Depot, we're not going to shut them down. True. But where we shop does make a difference, if we choose to shop with local businesses and local craftsmen. One family or even ten families boycotting the big guys isn't going to make a ripple, but if these same folks choose to only buy from the little guy, it could make the difference of the independent businessman staying in business or not.

3. I've been in nastier factories in Brooklyn than I have in China....... |

now India is another matter. But you know what, most womwn there are thrilled to be working at all, it's exploitive and it sucks, sure. It'll always be the second lowest level of living (right above substinence farming). But factory audits and compliance are common nowadays, and China doesn't do the cheapest labor anymore- it's outsources to Vietnam and Africa. Central America and some Carribean Islands are the worst these days. Those are some really awful manufacturers.
