A liberal's Thanksgiving prayer:
'Heavenly Father,

In these troubled times, thank you for your daily reminders of how much we have to be thankful for. Thank you for our little ones, who are happy and healthy and have a loving family. Thank you for this day, and this feast, which serve as another reminder of the bounty we are so privileged to enjoy. On this day, help us all to do Jesus' work and feed the hungry, shelter the cold, heal the afflicted, and comfort those in despair. In Jesus' mighty name we pray,

Amen'

I volunteered to lead the prayer at dinner yesterday. Partly because nobody on my wife's side of the family (the right-wing fundies) can pray worth a damn. It's all "We just thank you, Lord, and just praise you, God, and just this and just that....", but mostly because I'm going to be sick the next time I hear someone give thanks to "our glorious commander-in-chief". So to avoid idolatrous B*sh-worship at Thanksgiving, I offered up the above prayer.

Hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving! :hi:

2. My uncle's prayer
Edited on Fri Nov-26-04 12:45 PM by noshenanigans
It's a family tradition that the prayer is always said by my uncle- a super duper religious Methodist preacher. Mega conservative. I was already prepared for an onslaught of "Well, God put Clinton into office to show us how much we needed Bush" (my cousin said that), and a bunch of gloating to me, the sole "out" liberal of the family.

My uncle's known for his really long prayers, and this one was no exception- I clocked it at about 8 minutes. He has tendency to rapture about the pilgrims and give a short synopsis of the glory's God worked in helping found America.

But yesterday his prayer took a turn about halway through. He changed to "and God please help us to regain the freedoms we have lost and become the country we once were. More and more freedoms have been taken away, and please God help those with power see the error of their ways."

This was a marked contrast from what I was expecting, and later one of my cousins whispered to me "He's still so angry Kerry didn't win."

Never in a million years would I have thought he voted Democrat. Go figure.

3. That's good to know about your uncle. I'm glad he's seen the
light. The Methodist Church is one of the few places a good liberal Christian can go nowadays without feeling they're in a 'Greet the Apocolypse' fundy nightmare.

BTW, you might want to correct the spelling on "Demorat" unless you want people to think you're a freeper.

Welcome to DU! :hi:
