Seeking gift ideas for my Bush adoring parents in Kansas
I want to get them "What's the matter with Kansas?", but I don't think that's subtle enough.. and I'm fairly sure they'd just throw it in the trash and never read it. I kind of wish the author wouldn't have used that title.

I might go the other extreme at get them a book on Fascism or the fall of Rome/Soviet Union. Are there any good classic novels that deal with this type of subject matter?

What's the Matter with Kansas?: How Conservatives Won the Heart of America

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com
The largely blue collar citizens of Kansas can be counted upon to be a "red" state in any election, voting solidly Republican and possessing a deep animosity toward the left. This, according to author Thomas Frank, is a pretty self-defeating phenomenon, given that the policies of the Republican Party benefit the wealthy and powerful at the great expense of the average worker. According to Frank, the conservative establishment has tricked Kansans, playing up the emotional touchstones of conservatism and perpetuating a sense of a vast liberal empire out to crush traditional values while barely ever discussing the Republicans' actual economic policies and what they mean to the working class. Thus the pro-life Kansas factory worker who listens to Rush Limbaugh will repeatedly vote for the party that is less likely to protect his safety, less likely to protect his job, and less likely to benefit him economically. To much of America, Kansas is an abstract, "where Dorothy wants to return. Where Superman grew up." But Frank, a native Kansan, separates reality from myth in What's the Matter with Kansas and tells the state's socio-political history from its early days as a hotbed of leftist activism to a state so entrenched in conservatism that the only political division remaining is between the moderate and more-extreme right wings of the same party. Frank, the founding editor of The Baffler and a contributor to Harper's and The Nation, knows the state and its people. He even includes his own history as a young conservative idealist turned disenchanted college Republican, and his first-hand experience, combined with a sharp wit and thorough reasoning, makes his book more credible than the elites of either the left and right who claim to understand Kansas. --John Moe

8. Hmmm here is an idea!
You can Download Mein Kampf off the net. Go through and use a program to replace all instances of Germany with the U.S., and replace other key words with more US centric ones. Have it printed out at a kinkos or somewhere with a new cover called "My plan for America, together we can make it better".

Once it is all cleaned up so they cannot tell it was from hitler and sounds more modern, send it to them. Ask them later how they liked it :)

OR maybe send them a coffee mug with a Picture of Bush saying "2004" but then they fill it wil hot liquid it says "2004 Stolen, Bush sucks"

Just typical Kansas conservatives who would never vote for a Democrat in a million years. They're both pro-choice.

Edit: Maybe I could donate to BBV in their name.

17. Adding a shredded dollar bill
would be an additional nice touch. Perhaps you could have some Weebles labeled "Future Generations" surrounding it and holding it up,with one Weeble holding a miniature electric fan. Be sure to place it all under glass, because when the glass breaks when they throw the art form of our surrealistic future in the trash, the shit's gonna hit the fan.

26. do they actually read?
I don't believe in self-improvement gifts for somebody else. It isn't really Christma-y to imply that your loved ones need to pry open his or her teeny tiny mind with a crowbar. Even if it's true. :-)

The classic book on fascism/Stalinism is 1984 but if they are readers, they've already read it, and if they're not, they probably aren't going to read anything that isn't "fluff."

29. Go to the 'search' function here at the DU,
look for 'Photo of Bush with halo around his head', or 'Photo of Bush below 'Jesus'.

Print, frame. Wrap up. They will love it. There are literally hundreds of photos like that here in the archives.
