Seeking Advice - Canadian universities
A request to Canadian DU-ers and others with info --

I'd like some recommendations for my son for Canadian universities -- looking at the east (Ontario eastwards), small (or small-ish), liberal arts (english, history, politics) plus strong environmental sciences.

Also, any specific comments re Mount Alison University and Acadia University?

Thanks.

1. Here's an article I read recently
that might help you, because it specifically talks about US students coming to Canada. There are two pages to it, so you have to click on the second one at the bottom.

2. I worked with a girl that went to Mount A.
She said it was a wonderful school. (With a pretty good football team if I remember correctly). Don't know much more than that, highly recommend the east of Canada though.

3. Can't help you with eastern universities...
...as I've lived in British Columbia all my life. (Simon Fraser University grad '86; which, ironically, is a "small (or small-ish), liberal arts (english, history, politics) plus strong environmental sciences." school!!!

However, I can be of some help. Macleans Magazine (Time Mag's direct competition, all Canadian content, 100 years old) puts out an excellent, comprehensive university special edition every fall, which rates and critiques every school across Canada.

It's available to view online at http://www.macleans.ca/universities/.

Best of luck!!!

6. Thanks, checking that Macleans article now
I've heard good things about Simon Frasier, but it's just too far away from where we are in the northeast.

7. Careful. Last week on the news there was
Edited on Fri Nov-26-04 05:07 PM by tuvor
some university group that accused Macleans of dubious practices in compiling that list.

I can't recall specifics, but I'll see if I can come up with a link.

In the meantime, this University of Alberta alum would suggest not overlooking Alberta. There is no Provincial Sales Tax, which I think averages about 7% in the rest of the country.

ON EDIT: I Googled everything I could think of, using Google news and the regular Google search. I also checked the website of the station I heard the report on (news1130.com) but their archives only go back about a week-and-a-half.

Sorry.

5. Well, I graduated in 1978 so I'm somewhat out of date, but
This is a good place to start. It's a yearly survey of Canadian post-secondary institutions by Maclean's magazine.

9. Acadia, Mount A,, ST.FX , Dalhousie (in Halifax)
all good quality schools in friendly safe communities

Mount A is absolutely beautiful

Dal is a larger school in a smaller awesome city where he could take anything

I am about an hour away from each school so any questions you have I can try and answer

10. Thanks - Here's my first question
What's the best way to get to Acadia and Mount Alison?

Do I drive via Maine into NB and then across into NS, or is there a ferry from Maine that will take me to NS, and then my driving time (if not my travel time) would be reduced?

Thanks again.

13. going to Mount A in New Brunswick drive
not sure what roads you take in Maine, but once you get to NB it is nice highways (no tolls) mostly 4 lanes. Sackville is probably 3-4 hours from the St. Stephen crossing.

the ferry (which is seasonal anyways) doesn't really do much for that route, actually it is out of the way.

as for Acadia, it is probably 2.5 hours past Sackville, again not a bad drive.\

in season the ferry may save you a bit of time, there is the slow boat which runs overnight from Portland Maine then about 2 hours from Yarmouth to Wolfville
the catamaran fast ferry from bar harbor is 3 or 4 hours I think? and also pulls you into Yarmouth. so yeah it probably will save you some time, but it still not a bad drive. There is also a ferry from Saint John, NB to Digby, NS. It would save maybe 2 hours,

resources:
www.mapquest.com can give you directions and driving time

ferries
http://www.catferry.com/
http://www.princeoffundy.com/

you can also fly into Moncton (20 minutes from Sackville, Mount A)
or Halifax (1 hour from Wolfville, Acadia)

feel free to PM me if you want after this thread dies
