3. Perhaps
it makes them feel superior, somehow. Or they do it to distract you from your point or the argument you are trying to make. Seeing as spelling was not regularized until the 1800s, and that there are differences between English and American spellings, I'd say the only time to say something is when someone has misspelled a word so bad you can't figure out the meaning of the sentence or thought they are trying to get across.

5. I hate that!
It really is stupid. And it should make it obvious to people why Democrats have been painted as "liberal-elite-know-it-alls."

If I'm writing a LTTE or an essay or something, then point out my spelling and grammar mistakes. If I am not, then assume I was just typing on an Internet discussion thread and not worrying too much about whether or not I fat-fingered some keys.

10. The point was that
it was ironic that you were blasting people with a public education when you apparently can't or don't take the time to spell properly.

I think they would have given you a break on the misspellings if you hadn't made the comment that people who go to public schools are inferior.

14. i understand why that was.
but i want to explain what i mean is that the 15 year old TODAY are being dumbed down and that too many don't even CARE,i think thats what i meant by that.
I'm the rare one that wants to learn :)

Thanks BTW for correcting me that Unmature is not a word

11. You are being deliberately obtuse.
You were flamed for your spelling error because you compounded it with an unbelievably insulting post about people who attend public school. My post to you was remarkably restrained--I wanted to tell you to fuck off.

Edited on Fri Nov-26-04 04:54 PM by Rabrrrrrr
but I'll take your simple 'fuck off' as sufficient to the cause thereof.

12. IMO, on this particular board,
people are a lot more sensitive to nuances of good spelling and grammar because otherwise they are apt to be taken for freepers or trolls. I think the sort of unwritten rule here is to strive for a higher standard of writing than is typical on IRC or AOL.

Also, you *were* kinda rude to insinuate that 15 year olds who go to public schools are supposed to act like fools. I was also educated in the public school system, and resent that remark. So, basically, you started it. :)

15. Maybe
Misspelling sometimes leads to misunderstanding of the point to be made?

Maybe because there's something about a misspelled word that offends/distresses in an odd Felix Unger sort of way?

16. Because when you are arrogant enough to insult someone's intelligence,
you better proving your exemplary abilities in the post. Otherwise you look like an idiot.

And in your post, claiming that public school kids are "unmature" and not as smart is private or homeschooled kids, you came off looking like an idiot because of your made up word and your typos.

I'm a public school kid, and I sure noticed your typos and made up words.

Just like if you're going to laugh at someone for being a shitty ball catcher, you damn better be able to catch a ball yourself.

If you're going to insult someone's intelligence, you better not come of as uneducated and stupid in the way your form your insult.

17. Why not?
People who care about spelling are just as welcome here as anyone else :) you shouldn't take it so seriously. Everybody has certain buttons that set them off.

BTW, it helps not to have to wade through the whole thread to find the spelling flames. With big threads like that, it might be better to select the actual post (I'm guessing this is the one you were talking about).
