Ethics quesiton about my role as a reporter/father's son
See, my dad is a city councillor, some of the councillors he doesn't see eye to eye with have been hounding and harrassing him often. The most recent thing is them trying to say him being a councillor is a conflict of interest because he runs a print shop in town that the city uses sometimes. However, my father, when he began as councillor declared in open session he would not accept any job that wasn't tenured first and won by him. As well, becaus he was elected he put a stop to a deal with the city that would have made him about $25,000 a year. All work he has done has been properly tenured out (as he said) and there is no difference in the amount of money he has made of the city before and after his election (This is all documented).

Now, these councillors are trying to say he is in conflict of interest. He got an email today from one saying she would move to have him dis-qualified as a councillor if he didn't "Change his attitude."

THis is making me furious because he's not fighting back hard enough...he says stuff like "I'll wait and see what happens." However, he will be suing if they try to insinuate in public he is in conflict of interest.

I know some other dirt on this group of councillors....and I know MANY reporters in the city....

Would it be un-ethical for me sick them on these councillors?

1. if you were Rove you wouldn't have to ask
why not ask your dad what he would like - it is his life and when you get into someone's else's life - sometimes you can mess it up -

even thought your intention was good

something about letting people grow -

3. You already know the answer.
Else, you wouldn't be asking.

Tempting as it may be, you know you can't make it personal.

You can put a flea in the ear of another reporter, but no WAY should you be doing that story.

5. If ethics don't apply when things get tough,
Then they're not really ethics... are they?

9. Not evil... protective, yes. human, yes. But you're not evil because you
are not acting on it. Principles are only principles if you stick with them when they're inconvenient.

If it's a serious breach of ethics that you have dirt on, In My Opinion, you, as a member of the press, actually have a duty to see that it is brought to light, whether you do so or someone else does. If it's not serious, but could be spun that way, then your duty is to let your father handle his life as he sees fit.

Can you write an editorial/article (with full disclosure) on the matter?

Pcat

10. Well, if it is my dad I shouldn't write anything
But I don't see a problem with alerting the press I know.

7. Yes. It is unethical.
And I wouldn't do it for fear of getting your dad into more hot water. They'll figure out who the culprit is and think it was your dad's idea.

12. I came to a decision last night - I'm taking these bitches down...
Last night, my father almost burst into tears because as he said "this is the worst thing that has ever happened." He has dedicated much of his life to community involvement before he was even elected. And now these fucking cows are trying to fuck with his livelyhood and stuff because he happens to disagree with them on issues.

I decided, I'm not a reporter in the city, and if I wasn't a journalist it wouldn't make a difference. So, I'm going to be doing a shitload of investigating and then handing over my findings to every report I know in the Lower Mainland.

When this is done, I expect them to be ruined with possible criminal charges for conspiring against my father. We already have a little proof of that.

My Dad's too fucking nice...at least my Mom is evil...she's all for it. In fact my Father had to talk her out of going down to one of the pubs and shitkicking one of the ladies. (Gotta love a woman of Belfast Lineage)

I got a publisher fired. He was going to fire me for no good reason..other than bullshit lies he heard without asking me about them. I knew what he was up to. I sent an email under a sock puppet to head office....three weeks later he was fired.

He looked at me strange - you could tell he wasn't proud. But the way I seeit, if someone fucks with you it is your duty to fuck with them ten times worse.

15. Possibly...

But I don't see it that way. The way I see it, the ethical thing to do is to ensure what you know is reported. Not just for your father's sake, but also for the sake of the people who trust these councillors to conduct themselves professionally and do right by the public.

In my opinion, there's no question you should do it.
