I Just Installed a 130 GB Hard Drive in My Computer. Ask Me Anything.
Edited on Fri Nov-26-04 09:14 PM by Sporadicus
My teenage sons' music was getting totally out of hand; almost 2/3 of the original 30 GB hard drive was filled with MP3s. Every single one is now residing comfortably in a single folder on the new hard drive called simply 'music.' I'm leaving it to them to sort out their individual tunes

On edit: the computer was already configured inside with an extra bracket for another hard drive AND there was a power supply cable + an ATA cable closeby, so that part of the installation was a snap. The most difficult, time-consuming part of the deal was cleaning the filthy computer :puke:
I improvised a vacuum attachment with the vacuum cleaner hose, a toilet paper roll, a large-bore soda straw and lots of duct tape.

1. I have two 80GB drives and I worry about running out of space.
My next system will have a pair of 300+ GB drives in a Raid 0 configuration. And yes I will make sure to back up the important stuff.

4. What's the Opposite of Being a Pack-Rat?
that's me. When I no longer see a need for something, I jettison it ASAP - same with computer programs. That may explain how I've managed to get along so far with only the 30 GB hard drive.

9. That May Become a Possibility in the Near Future
A friend of mine just became manager of a local computer store - strictly PC stuff, nothing else. He wants me to come aboard as a part-time repairman & assembler. They have some really neat computer cases (with & without power supplies), but they're fairly pricey IMO. My friend is a confirmed liberal, so we'd get along in that department. When I last visited the store, techno dance music played the entire time. I'd have to wear GOOD earplugs to work in that environment for any length of time.

7. Nope. No Difference
I plan to perform a defrag on the original hard drive later tonight. It was so full, I wasn't able to run that program! I may see some improvement afterward - although everything has run OK thus far.

I can't use on my new XP Toshiba because the driver hasn't been certified with the "Windows logo." (It's a USB driver.)I went to the HP site and got the driver, and got that warning...which also told me my machine could be impaired and destabilized!!

So, now what?????

I was planning to copy a couple of things using the old Windows 98 machine...and wouldn't you know it?? The drive really started going bad.....but I guess I'm lucky....I JUST got everything transferred over to the new XP yesterday after about a week of working on it....(Close call!!)

check this out. The greatest piece of spyware ever.
http://www.hevanet.com/peace/microsoft.htm
Hidden Connections Microsoft Windows XP connects with other computers, or expects to be allowed through the user's network protection firewall, in more than 16 ways. Network security is something the computer user and the operating system supplier need to do together, but Microsoft seems to show little sensitivity to the user's security needs.

The issue is not that the connections are always bad for the user. The issue is that Microsoft has moved from making operating systems that are independent to making operating systems that try to connect to Microsoft's own computers, and are somewhat dependent on new ways of having access through the software firewall. Windows XP is the first Microsoft operating system to challenge whether the user can have control over his or her own computer.

15. Install it anyway
The chances of it screwing anything up are remote.

That is to say, still get the XP drivers, even if M$ hasn't "certified" them yet.
