2. I think it actually used to be like that in the early days of our republic

They did have brawls in the chambers. I think there was a northern senator who was beaten really badly by a southern senator to he point of being crippled:

Senator Charles Sumner of Massachusetts was severely beaten with a cane on the Senate floor by Rep. Preston Brooks of South Carolina after Sumner insulted Brooks' uncle, Senator Butler of South Carolina, in a speech on the admission of Kansas to the union.

I remember NPR used to play a Canadian show, edited down to half an hour at least a couple of times a week -- 'As It Happens,' I think it was -- where I actually heard one member of the Canadian Parliament call another a 'crazy bastard' during a discussion. The whole discussion, in fact, was so heated I sat in the car for an extra ten minutes to listen to the rest of the segment. If they do that in our own lege, we seldom have it pointed out to us, unless it's practically a brawl. It seemed like, according to the commentator, it wasn't all that unusual.

The Brits argue quite heatedly, too.

Where they yell baaahhhh to each other? Sometimes I watch it because it's so funny when they make that sound. I actually like that. I wish our government did that. They seem to have a more spirited debate. Unlike ours...all constipated and stuff.
