I'm not a virgin anymore!
Edited on Sat Nov-27-04 12:21 AM by yvr girl
A martini virgin.

Tonight, I had my first real Martini. Gin, Vermouth, Olives. Nothing frou, frou.

I just thought y'all should know.

2. Yee hah!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm so very proud of you, Yvr Girl!

What kind of gin? How much vermouth in proportion to the gin?

But more importantly of all - What did you think of it?!?!?!?!

(and Martini should be capitalized, since it's a name)

10. I'm humbled that I made you proud
I went with the Bombay Sapphire. I used 1/2 ounce of vermouth to 2 1/2 ounces of gin. I also made it dirty. I think I'll use less vermouth next time.

I liked it.

32. Woo hoo! I'm glad you liked it!
And I have to say, that's a fair amount of vermouth. It's good that you feel there should be less. :-)

Drink on!

3. did you like it? appletinis and chocotinis are like candy.
the best part of a real martini is the big fat olives, imo.

4. I prefer mine with a twist...
Edited on Sat Nov-27-04 12:20 AM by Spider Jerusalem
the brininess of the olive just ruins the drink for me.

And the gin should preferably be Sapphire.

6. Never had a martini I actually liked
I can't stand the taste or smell of gin...maybe I ought to try a vodka martini someday.

I do, however, LOVE the whole aesthetic thing about martini's. The cool glasses, the streamlined martini shakers and glass stirrers, the whole "noir" feeling they evoke. Just can't stand the actual drink...blech*

7. Step 1 is to ditch the olive...
step 2 is to go for a more complex, smoother gin like Bombay Sapphire or Tanqueray Malacca or XO that doesn't taste like concentrated essence of pine-scented air freshener.

9. Try a vodka martini...
Get yourself a good bottle of vodka (I was drinking Grey Goose Vanilla the other night) and you can't go wrong. I know this must be sacrilegious but I actually prefer vodka martinis...they are much smoother IMHO. There is just some kitschy goodness to be had with a nice martini

Oh and welcome to DU!

13. Not a "Martini" w/o an olive.
I believe that a Martini with a small white onion instead of an olive is called a "Gibson".

17. Interesting...
I lost my martini virginity when visiting Canada. Not too good, I must say.

Gin is like drinking a pine tree, I didn't care for it at all. Now a good vodka martini - shaken, not stirred with a twist - that's the way to go!

18. I'm more of a vodka person myself
But I was trying to be a purist. I was advised to go with a premium gin which I did. It helped, because my prior opinion of gin was not good.

19. Don't know what kind of gin I had
But it was uber-gross.

I'm a Tequila fellow myself, if liquor is there. But a nice beer is more my speed. Just a nice cold draft - so refreshing.

22. My favorite
Wheat beer is my favorite kind. A good full-bodied summer wheat beer like Bell's Oberon. So refreshing.

I've really developed a taste for beer since I swore of all "big" beer companies. I stick to regional microbrews and such. It's so much better.

After a few Martinis, maybe you can convince them to help out with this whole World-Going-To-Shit thing?
