Are you ready to be sent into the world?
Manners, manners, manners! How are yours? Are you cosmopolitan enough to be mannerly in other countries? Or would you be an embarassment and pointed out as the Ugly American? Here's a quiz to check your notions about manners in other countries. Be forewarned: what is acceptable in the U.S. might be a wrong move elsewhere!

P.S. I scored 8/11 on the quiz myself.

3. I got 7/11, but it still says I am "Ready to travel!"
The chinese one is very interesting, and to this American, the Iranian one is pretty gross! Sorry, Iran!

5. Heh
Now you can have an all-expense paid trip to Iraq courtesy of the U.S. Army!

Either that, or run like hell to Canada! :)

6. 8/11...I'm Not a TOTAL Boor
Every multinational entity should conduct classes specific to the nation where companies send their representatives. That test was far from comprehensive, BTW. There are many, many other opportunities to offend people in a host nation that don't even occur to the offender. For instance, the 'OK' sign of a circle made with thumb & first finger is as offensive as the raised middle finger in ours; the 'OK' sign calls the recipient an asshole. Same for the 'thumbs-up' sign, which means 'up yours' in some places.

A friend who frequently traveled on business to Japan told me about a real boor who once accompanied him. The guy had a terrible head cold and whipped out a filthy snot-rag to loudly blow his nose in public. The Japanese citizens parted like the Red Sea before Moses when this guy meandered through a crowd. Japanese etiquette demands that people wear face masks when in the throes of some communicable respiratory illness.

7. Poor wording
"Your Iranian host gives you a right-handed fork by mistake"

Now, I'm familiar with the "right hand" rule when eating in Iran, but the question clearly says that I was given the right-handed fork BY MISTAKE. So, I would ask for a left-handed one, politely, of course.

12. No, trick question...There *IS* no "left-handed fork".
It's like the old machinist's hazings of the young apprentice, sending him to the tool crib for a left-handed monkey wrench or a pint of Maiden Oil....

The question about Scots calling lunch dinner is interesting; down South people call lunch dinner--there are many scottish bloodlines down here.

10. 6/11...yikes
Reminds me of dinner last night...was eating at a local Chinese restaurant in my neighborhood and in walks a group of American high school kids (figured they were on a class trip to the UK, as their chaperone told them to be sure and make the bus on time). It was a small restaurant, hardly anyone there, and they were being loud and obnoxious...the waiter came over to take the order, and the students didn't appear to be very satisfied with the menu...asked the guy "Do you, like, know what General Tao's chicken is?"

Oh well...
