Country Music Reminds Me of Bush Voters |
|
I'll admit it. I wasn't all that thrilled with country music to begin with, but now it's so Red States I can hardly listen to it at all. When I'm in a supermarket and they've got twangy guitar music on, it reminds me of the dismay I felt hearing the election returns on November 2nd.
I try to concentrate on the price of pork chops, but the music reminds me that George Bush was re-elected. It should have gone away by now, but this association is hard to shake.

1. You can console yourself - |

with the knowledge that Tim McGraw is a Democrat, and with the knowledge that my father is simultaneously a country music fan, an auto-racing fan, AND a highly educated lifelong Democrat who loathes the Shrub as much as we do.

13. Country artists should be Democrats. |
|
It stands to reason. They sing about the hardships and heartaches of ordinary, working class people.
I am glad to hear Tim McGraw is a Democrat. Is his wife a Democrat, too? We should get some of the country artist Democrats, other than the Dixie Chicks, to speak out more.

Someone on another message board once told me that John Mellencamp is a Democrat because he only SINGS about farming, he isn't actually a farmer himself. :eyes: She then "reminded" me that all the farm states are red states (I guess she's never heard of Minnesota).
I don't know if Faith Hill is a Democrat or not. It would be nice if she is.

I hear that train a-commin', it's rollin' around the bend And I ain't seen the sunshine since I don't know when I'm stuck in Folsom prison and time keeps draggin' on But that train keeps a-rollin' on down to San Antone When I was just a baby, my mama told me, son Always be a good boy, don't ever play with guns But I shot a man in Reno, just to watch him die When I hear that whistle blowin', I hang my head and cry
I bet there's rich folks eatin' in a fancy dining car They're probably drinking coffee and smoking big cigars But I know I had it coming, I know I can't be free But those people keep a-movin' and that's what tortures me
Well if that freed me from this prison and that railroad train was mine I bet I'd move it on a little farther down the line Far from Folsom prison, that's where I want to stay And I'd let that lonesome whistle blow my blues away

Although it's debatable if she's country. The radio stations don't play her any more and I've always thought her closer to a pop/folk sort of mix.
Edit: for spelling, as usual.

14. I pushed to play a lot of MCC back in my radio days. |
|
I had to stick mostly to the radio-friendly hits, though, like "I Feel Lucky" and "Passionate Kisses."
In those days, she was getting a lot more airplay on Americana stations than on country stations. I left country radio almost ten years ago, but at that time you either had a "hot country" station playing the cookie-cutter hat acts or you had a "classic country" station playing everything "old" from roots country to Mickey Gilley. There was no room for innovative artists who bucked the cookie cutter trend.

She's the only one I bother to go to anymore. I've seen her, gosh, 6 or 7 times. It's always wonderful; always different.
From one fan to another. :hi:

Among hard core country fans, it doesn't seem to get old at all. The names change but the formula doesn't. The stuff I hear now sounds the same as I heard forty years ago. Of course, to them it sounds hip and contemporary . . .

Glad you prefer the more mellow stylings of lite jazz!
I love most kinds of country music (along with numerous other genres). Who knows what kind of dreck you hear in a Yankee supermarket?

10. I'll tell you what we heard this morning. It was bizarre. |
|
First we heard "Both Sides Now" by Judy Collins (which, by the way, is a song I just LOATHE), followed by an orchestral version of "O Tannenbaum," followed immediately by "More Than A Feeling" by Boston.
It was like a sound system with multiple personality disorder.

and artists.
As soon as I find out someone is a Republican (or worse - a vocal Bush supporter), I lose all respect for them.

Dixie Chicks. Oh I forgot, country music disowned them. Even more reason to hate country music and their ilk.
