Is your kitty a lap cat?
Or more standoffish? Which breeds are most likely to be lap lovers and/or generally more affectionate? My cat will snuggle in bed and will nestle next to my mousing arm while I'm on the computer, but she's not really much of a lap cat.

14. I have four; all VERY different!
I have a very sweet, totally submissive 14 y/o "she-it" (spayed)kitty that is a lap, head, shoulders, feet and anywhere else she can find to snuggle cat. Anastasia

I have an 11 y/o love-slut, "she-it" kitty that ALWAYS wants affection, but won't stay still long enough to be a lap cat. She just shoves her head under anyone's unsuspecting hand, or walks between their unsuspecting legs (shes been the cause of more than a few human falls!) Madeline

I have a 4 y/o "she-it" all black, long haired Maine Coon kitty that only wants affection when I'm doing laundry or sittin on the john...she's a weird one. Sadie-Bear

And recently my oldest daughter acquired a "he-it" Siamese-mix that is not yet a year old. He's just your typical aggressive, crazed lunatic of a male kitty that plays with any-and-everything (including my sleeping feet under the covers in middle of the night *UGH*!) and trys to dry-hump the "She-it" kitties not having yet realized he's missing the necessary equipment for any romantic ventures. Baxter

Thank GOD my oldest daughter will be taking Baxter and Madeline with her to college next year! Four cats is three too many, if ya ask me.

Saffy

3. Male cats
tend to be lap cats. Female cats are more playful but standoffish.

4. Mine is a lap cat when it chooses
Hates to be picked up against its will - "if it's not the cat's idea, it's crap."

She's a medium-sized brown-patch tabby.

7. I have a very affectionate Persian
He's sweet and very docile. He was a stray, so I didn't have to pay for him. I think they might be expensive to buy. I always take in strays and all but one (a Siamese) have been lap cats. The Siamese was very affectionate--he insisted on being pet all the time--but he didn't like to sit on my lap.

Ragamuffin's are also very affectionate cats.

I also had a mixed tabby cat who was very affectionate. That, I assume, was due to the personality of that particular cat rather than breed.

If you go to the humane society and look at the cats for a while and play with them, you might get a sense of a particular cat's personality. I have also heard on the radio show "Calling All Pets," that you can ask to take an animal on a temporary basis, for a trial period. It might seem a bit harsh, but the animal behaviorist recommends it when you are introducing an animal into a household where there is already one or more pets.

8. Been raising mine since it was five weeks old.
It sleeps on me, sits on my shoulder when I read, lies in my lap when I am watching tv. It's very taken with me.

:-)

10. One is, one isn't
Our male hangs with us, the female generally doesn't.

They're siblings, plain old indoor cats...but very smart and good looking too.

11. Marvin is a SHOULDER cat
Thank goodness he's a scrawny cat.. He just climbs the back of my office chair and hangs over my shoulder..front legs dangling down my front, and back ones hanging down my back.. I can get up from my chair and walk around the house like that.. I cannot see how he's comfy that way, but he does it all the time, so he must be comfy..

12. My cat Tommy hates to sit in my lab. He is not too affectionate.
He comes whenever he wants to be petted and might sit down next to me on the couch...for about 5 minutes a day. That is it.

13. My cat hates people
She even attacks people who visit. We have to put her in the office when people come over so she won't hurt them.

She's ok so long as no one she doesn't know is here and no one tries to pick her up. She will occasionally hop on my husband's lap but that's not too common. She's also nice to our daughter, but our daughter knows not to try to pick her up and to be gentle.

She was a rescue kitten and no one knows how old she was when she was separated from her mom, or what her early kittenhood was like. She's cranky and all, but she's part of the family.

We'd like to get a nicer cat but we're afraid to introduce another cat because the one we have might hurt it. So we're a one-cat family.

17. Mine are lap cats
My kitties, Frank & Beans, are siblings. They are very affectionate, but only on their terms. If I try to pick them up, or hold them, FORGET it. If I sit still, they will come to me.

20. All of mine are lap cats at one time or another during any given day
One key part of it is if you get them when they are really little and acclimate them to being held and cuddled by humans.

Ours (except for one) were born here and handled by us before they could see. They are very loving and affectionate kitty kats (one we call the Lickinator)

If they are passing by and you want one to sit on you, just pat your lap and he will come check it out and usually stay for a while.

And they love to sleep with me too
