My idiot freeper brother
thinks he's a patriot because he is employed by the government(?) and flies the flag after dark (a no-no) and in the rain (ditto). Well, the flagpole rots and breaks leaving the flag lying on the ground, the zenith of disrespect. And dumbass leaves the house WITHOUT EVEN NOTICING! If I disrespected the flag as much as he did, I would leave it lying there until he picked it up. But I love my country no matter how stupid and incompetent the citizens are.

F*cking Repukes! All talk and no brains.

But, of course, I'm a democrat so I hate America because of it's freedom.

1. Heh heh - I was just reading the "what is irony" thread
and came to this thread. How fitting!

And how ironic.

Though I find that many who call themselves patriots, don't do much that is actually patriotic. Much like Christians - the ones who claim it the loudest (like Loser McShitEater Traitor, our "president") are the worst ones.

Can't tell you the number of rightwingers I've seen with frayed, discolored, erroneously displayed, and otherwise defaced/disrespected flags.

makes me ill. Meanwhile, all sorts of liberals, who are true patriots, quietly put out their flags, bring them in, take care of them, etc., all the while never feeling the need to announce to the world what super patriots they are.

4. Maybe if we were more gentle with our criticism
... they'd listen. Haven't you heard of the saying, "you can get more flies with sugar then you can with vinegar"?

8. More gentle with what criticism?
And who is "we" and who is the "whom" who are receiving said theoretical criticism?

10. Welcome to DU
Razorback!

Sorry, I get fed up with some BS from right-wing nuts. They deserve to be attacked.

Rest assured my no good brother pulls no punches and wants everyone who disagrees with his fascist agenda DEAD. I have heard him say so.

We must defend ourselves, if only by exposing them as the scum that they are.

2. I have a problem......
I have flown the flag at my house for many years, both on a flag pole and on a stanchion on the porch. I flew them upside down for days as of 8:00AM November 3, 2004......but now I am not flying them. I feel it is almost a better protest to sport an empty pole than to fly them upside down. I guess it will take time for me to honor the country as it is configured now, I really do hate it for now. I have to watch my flags as I had the porch one stolen by a right-wing patriot from my neighborhood, so it is just easier to not fly them.

3. And I bet you're an "elitist" too!
Which is repug-speak for any evidence of the capacity for abstract thought.

Repugs fall into three categories, with some overlap: Ignorant, Evil, or just plain Stupid.

"Idiot Freeper" -- isn't that redundant????

Edited on Sat Nov-27-04 05:51 PM by gordianot
When Bush landed on the aircraft carrier he said "You have to admire Bush he did what he said he was going to do defeat Terrorists".

At that time no one knew for sure there were no WMD. He then commented on the Mission Accomplished sign. "They will have to reelect Bush". He still uses that line.

He would never be able to find his flag it is under too much trash.

Too bad can't choose your relatives

:puke:

Oh by the way I use the non critical approach with him, it does not help much. If you were around him long you would want to put out vinegar.

6. I realize I'm new here (note number of posts) ..
But I'm sort of taken aback by the name calling. Once you start calling people names you immediately loose their attention, as well as your arguement.

14. Good point
but I am not trying to convert my brother. He should stay with the other fascist idiots.

And I have tried to tell him how to respect the flag in a substantial way according to protocol. But he is the patriot so he need not respect flag protocol; he just needs to say how patriotic he is.

9. Should have taken a picture of it
Making sure his house was clearly visible in the background.
Make up one flyer;-) Caption: Why do you hate America? Or, This is respect? Something, you know your brother's buttons best I'm sure.

Then put one on the windshield of his car or in his mailbox. Let him think that every other car parked on the street/mail box got one too  Shame him a little bit :-)

12. Great idea
I already took care of it. I will probably burn it in a respectful fashion before his eyes. That is how one does away with a flag, I think.

13. Yes, you burn it
After it's touched the ground and gotten dirty, the only proper way EVER to dispose of a US flag is to burn it.

16. NO
The flag can be cleaned, it can be washed, it can be repaired. Only when uncleanable/damaged beyond repair is it disposed of, by taking it apart (slicing it down the stripes) and the remnants burned... note that is not burned while intact, nor in public.

I did this for 20 years, it annoys me to no end to see how poorly flags are taken care of. Flying one to destruction is worse then disrespect, it shows neglect: you don't hate your flag (country), you don't even care enough to hate it.

17. Well, of course, if it's repairable or cleanable one should do that.
Sorry I was unclear on that one. Didn't mean to imply that it should be burned when soiled, though I certainly did.

oops!

18. I thought there was a proper way to burn a flag
I just wasn't sure what that proper way was.
And where does one take a flag for cleaning and repair?

20. 'Flag Cleaners'...
a company in San Diego, does laundry service for the Navy, including washing flags.

Depending on the material of the flag, a good dry cleaner works, or for a cotton flag, machine wash and line dry... machine drying usually is bad, it always made the white stripes shrink (and not the rest for some reason).

When destroying the flag, first you tear it into pieces (so it's no longer a flag), then burn the pieces (so they can't be used for anything else/lesser).

25. Thanks HH
:hi: How ya doing?

I dunno but tossing the flag in the washing machine just didn't seem the right thing to do, but  I'm glad to know that I can and that's it's OK.

I mean after all, I do wash my unmentionables in that same machine;-) Just won't do it at the same time :-)

26. Wash the flag by itself.
AND if the colors run, you'll have to dispose of it.

Cold water, hand washing is probably better, depending on what the flag is made of...

and photoshop a flag into it

I read that you had already taken care of it, Thank You good move, I don't think I could have left it lie on the ground either. Sickening sight. Burning it is the proper way but I believe there is a "proper way" to burn it. I think :freak: I'm sure someone else knows for sure.

21. proper disposal of the flag
Check with your local VFW hall, or ask a local boy scout leader, collecting damaged flags and doing the proper disposal is a popular project for eagle scouts. There is a proper way to do it, not sure WHAT it is, but these folks do.
