Watching the 4-DVD Live Aid concert today.... |

Anyone got the DVD's? I'm almost through the first disc and am heartened that I finally get to see it. (I was working a double shift when it came out and was too broke to own a VCR).
But, my God, I'v never seen more mullets in my life! Sting, Bryan Adams, Freddy Mercury and Phil Collins were about the only ones NOT sporting one! LOL
......... Wow, though, waves of nostalgia with U2 just doing a rousing rendition of Sunday, Bloody Sunday (and they were relative newcomers at the time)... What happened to that world wide spirit of hope and collaboration towards a common cause?
My my we really have not come very far at all, have we?

2. Unfortunately, Led Zep would not let their bits appear--subpar performance |

In actuality, there was never supposed to be a taped performance. Bob Geldorf maintained that (for legal expediency) it should be looked at as a one time performance. But, BBC did tape the British performances (most of them) at Wembly and good ole MTV came up with tons of boxes of B roll that they didn't even know they had (no one formally taped the US concerts at JFK stadium in Phili. Lots of performances are missing because the tapes were missing or damaged (or like LZ, they refused permission).
But, it is a miracle that we have anything at all and 4 DVDs for $30? Wow, I couldn't resist. From what I hear the Queen performances with the late Freddy Mercury are worth the cost of admission alone. But, it also has the wild Mick Jagger/Tina Turner performance the Mick + David Bowie "Dancing in the Street segment," Dire Straits with Sting and apparently some phenomenal Eric Clapton solos (ad U2's SBS with "Bad" were good....
I look forward to seeing it all...

6. I think Phil had trouble keeping up, but apparently LZ hadn't played |

together in nearly 6 years, (since the death of drummer John Bonham in 1980)they didn't get any real rehearsal with Phil or the other substitute drummer they used and Robert Plants voice was very out of shape. Most real Zeppelin fans that I know have said they have never heard them play so poorly (all of them) in a live performance before. I can't speak either way-- I like LZ but have never even seen them in concert before.
But,to defend their decision to not let their perfomances be included, apparently Plant and Page are donating their next CD profits to LIVE AID charity.

3. It's a lot more incomplete than just Led Zeppelin's set... |
|
I have a 17-disc comprehensive audio set, and comparing the tracklists of the two shows a lot of missing stuff.

anything... The quality is uneven, but certainly watchable and some performances were really excellent. Apparently a generator blew during some major performances, some mics weren't cut on in time on US or British feeds, etc., etc. If you think about it-- there were no computers or cell phones to coordinate this massive undertaking on two continents in 1985-- messages still went via telex and some phone calls had to be scheduled hours in advance from some countries!
But, the proceeds are still going to the Live Aid cause--20 years later, so for all its flaws it is worth it, I think. Seems Geldorf was convinced by others that so many younger folks coming up would never know what it was all about if they did not attempt a video release.
