What is a good Charity Org to donate clothing/furniture/ect? |
|
I've been cleaning out the house and I've got a bunch of stuff that I'll need to donate. I usually just drop stuff off at Goodwill but I'm not sure if I like the way they charge people for the goods. So I'd like to donate it to some kind of shelter...maybe for domestic violence victims.
I've seen posts where people here condemn certain charitable organizations for their ties with republicans ect. So are there any good Democratic organizations?

2. sucks that Bush just called for people to donate and volunteer |
|
SHEESH! Just read that in LBN! Makes me not want to do it, but I have way too much stuff. Need to get rid of it and garage sales are for the birds.

3. I also like the thrift shops that support Battered Women's shelters |
|
We have several here in Fort Worth.
There is a thrift shop for the YWCA which is for their women's programs(shelter, transitional housing for young women who age out of foster care, day care, etc.)
Berry Good Buys is for the Women's Shelter of Tarrant County
and there are others.
Goodwill charges for the goods, which often are purchased by the non needy, in order to give jobs to folks who might not otherwise have one.
YWCA sells the donations to fund its programs, as does Berry Good Buys.
Also, I get a call at least once a month from Leukemia/Lymphoma society that their truck is coming around to pick up my castoffs, which they sell to help families in crisis and to fund programs.

9. I don't give anything to Salvation Army |
|
They're first of all a fundamentalist outfit, whose mission is saving us heathen first. I used to debate a couple of them on the biblical errancy board a few years back. Pure loons.

5. I usually donate stuff to Goodwill |
|
Because they're not a religious organization. Plus over 30 years ago I bought my first furniture from them really cheap.
Other than that I'd recomend Disabled American Veterans. They sell the stuff, and donate money and other things to disabled Vets. Plus, they'll pick it up at your home.

6. not sure - I am clearing out things too |
|
I called good will and they give to disabled or mentally challenged by training them - that seemed good
there is a local shelter for aa/drug types and I believe homeless - but it is judeo/christian - and right now I am not too happy with the way those types have been shoving their beliefs down our throats aka Bush xtains - plus I feel the churches can give there
so I am taking my things to a consignment shop - after 90 days if it does not sell - it is theirs -
I get some money and others get recycled items
I let them price the clothing and books the other things I have priced at yard sale prices
Not sure what they do with left overs - some times I see things there for a year later - but not sure what clothes
when I lived in connecticut - I gave some things to rescue mission - which also did training
some of these things that I can not throw in my car and take to the consignment shop
I will probably call the shelter for items to pick up - the then sell them and use the money for what they do - I have not been in the place where they sell things - so I have no idea how they price them
I think most of these places price things too high -
there was a consignment shop in conn - consignment originals - it really moved clothes and other things - they only took top of the line - and they sold within a month - but they also priced then at yard sale prices - you didn't make a lot but you knew you would sell and get money -

8. I always donate to W.E.A.V.E |
|
they especially need pj's for infants to adults. They also always need diapers, toothbrushes and any kind of clothing. If you aren't familiar with WEAVE they are Women escaping a violent environment, they are a temp shelter for victims of domestic abuse, male or female. They get very busy around the holidays and they always can use donations. If you call your local police they should be able to give you the number of the local chapter in your town.

I see you are in New Orleans. I'm just a little ways east over in Pearl River County. You may want to call the New Orleans Mission on Oretha Haley Blvd to see if they take what you have to offer or they may be able to tell you of local families who may need furniture. Also the T-P has articles this time of year for peoples needs. Its worth the extra effort to pass on our goods to those who need them. Have a Merry Christmas.
I was Christmas shopping in the Quarter yesterday. Very successful episode and I had a beer at the Tropical Isle to top off my day. If there is one city in the world I love it is New Orleans.

I love your nick by the way! You know they are/were filming a "Dukes Of Hazzard Movie" outside of Baton Rouge somewhere I believe.
Anyway, I really appreciate your advice. I'll be contacting the New Orleans Mission and checking out the TP.
Glad to see there's some good Democrats in Pearl River! Guess Y'all didn't get hit by any of those tornadoes last week...that was freaky.
Happy holidays and check out the Louisiana forum from time to time :)

they will come and pick it up. Every once in a while I get a card in the mail saying they will be making the rounds and if I have anything to donate just call them and then leave it on the front porch.
