That's it! I'm staying out of the lounge... |
|
Edited on Sat Sep-20-03 06:38 AM by wyldwolf
I often hear the lounge lizards (of which I am some really odd hybrid of) talk about the flame fests and candidate bashing in General Discussion.
Seems to me though that DU was established for heated and passionate political discussions and the lounge was probably an after thought.
But If a read ONE MORE "Your #1 absolute favorite album of all time-Your #1 absolute favorite song of all time-Your #1 absolute best guitar player of all time-I hate Britney-I hate J-lo-I hate friends-ask me anything-thread" or some cleverly (not) reworked retread of the above threads, I'll trash the place!
I don't mind my candidate being trashed. That's politics. But the holier-than-thou entertainment snobs in the lounge give the place a bad name.
There's now a thread complaining about how stiff Al Gore and Grey Davis are. Urghghghgh!
I guess I'm a GD GenDiscus kinda guy now!

Too busy talking to hear what they're saying. They're chat room geeks. I guess you feel more like a member of the Democratic Party when your peers agree with you on a variety of trivial and non-political subjects.

i've been around DU since the very beginning, and i rarely post at all now. i catch myself typing a response and thinking, 'is it really worth it?' usually, i hit the back button and abandon my response. if you would like to converse on real topics with real substance, just let me know. i'm ready.

that, in my special designation of Member, Not Moderator, THIS OBVIOUSLY belongs in the Lounge...or perhaps we need to add a 'whiney-baby' forum!
Listen, for other reasons, I CANNOT post in the I/P forum and I very rarely begin a post anywhere else except to the CivilRights forum! So, tough!! Look upon me as your guru, thread oiginator, just follow your new 'guru' who advises you with lovingkindness: if you can't stand them, or they make you too angry or even if they hurt too much (as for me in I/P): just "moveon" and get the "truthout", i.e., FUCKING ignore them.

22. not irrelevant....minor but not irrelevant |

ANYTHING that a candidate does is relevant to his success or failure in the campaign. anything that shows him or her in a less favorable light is relevent.
2 parts of the equation. how does he run and how will he govern if elected. discussing either is not petty.
i don't get the bit about being insulting to the backers at all. unless the backers are his dance teachers.
to be clear...some people just don't have rythmn.
having or not having rythmn does not effect how a person will govern but whether or not a candidate is put in a position that makes him or her appear awkward does effect the campaign.

and I agree, Griping for the sake if griping is, well, just griping. Like the countless griping threads in the lounge on earth shattering issues like sitcoms and pop music.
And the most hysterical part is that the lounge folks constantly gripe about GD.
But let one GD thread complain about the lounge and, well, someone starts crying.

I happen to like GD, LBN, and the Lounge (when I get tired of weeding through the candidate bash fests)
The lounge reminds me of a stupid B movie you happen across on the tube and you catch yourself secretly wanting to know how it ends.
I'm just happy our horse skin feelings are fine.

1. I hope that means you like Country Joe & the Fish! When I lived in San Francisco, we would run into both (Country) Joe and his Dad in lines waiting for movies and just in various places around town - both men were really nice (and both very politically left/labor/progressive);
and
2. O.K., then we'll have President Kucinich and Vice-Presidents Clark and Edwards.

Some of those 'lounge lizards' can be pretty funny. I LIKE a thread called "I Heard Clark Might Have Eaten A Clark Bar". Wouldn't be appropriate for GD, but makes perfect sense for the Lounge. Also, some of the best writers in DU visit the Lounge from time to time, and make great contributions (Plaid Adder comes to mind). One more thing... The vast majority of Dems or Repube voters in this country don't care about the microscopic dissection of the candidates as practiced in GD. Bush=Evil is what's important to most of us, and I'm glad DU provides a Big Tent to gather in. Now... Have you been to the Meeting Room lately? :-)

..and the points are well taken, but the constant bashing of certain elements of the entertainment industry there can be just as insulting as the candidate bashing is to folks in GD.. Plus, it's a lot more petty.
And the constant retread music/movie posts that clog the lounge are so pointless they're frustrating. Often done to draw attention to other's "superior" or "inferior" taste. And since taste is personal preference, they do resemble personal attacks.

30. That's what makes DU so great — |
|
something for everyone. There's a forum for just about every political issue and Democrats and progressives of every stripe. DU is the big tent theory writ large.
An analysis of group dynamics will show that the Lounge serves a vital function in building group cohesion. So what may seem like innocuous posts on trivial topics, it really is building a sense of community, caring and commitment to the group that will carry us through the struggles and issues that we are discussing in the other forums.
Although you may personally see no value in this, it does serve a purpose here and judging by its popularity, many other people do as well.

37. A lot of veteran GD posters visit the Lounge regularly |
|
to blow off steam. I think it's a healthy habit. Many of those you see in the Lounge starting such comparison threads are even as they post engaged in heated verbal battles elsewhere on these boards.
Others of us have been staying out of contentious fora for more than a month now, for reasons varying from burn-out to high blood pressure.
Personally, I'm getting a little weary of people in one place riding the high horse over the other. From my perspective there's very little difference between GD and the Lounge. Both places are overwhelmed in the signal to noise ratio. There are deep and rewarding discussions offered in both places. - But those sink like a stone in favour of tabloid style headlines, high-profile flame bait and a chance to argue the the same tired argument with the same intractible people using the same trite talking points in the one fora, -and the same tired sex, yak, music and movie threads in the other.
When we were growing up my mother used to tell us that our boredom was our own responsibility, not hers.
There is a usenet forum I've frequented which is well and truly self-moderated by a group of people who do not suffer fools or foolishness gladly. Whenever someone whines in that forum about the type and 'quality' of the posts the denizens all rise up en masse and tell dude on the other end of the whinge: "You don't like what you see here? -Post something different. You don't like what we've given you to read? - It's a user-controlled forum; post something you like. It's not our job to entertain you."
