"To whom it may concern..."
Does anyone else here think that is a jerk/asshole of a greeting to put on a letter?

1. No, I don't think so
It's a formal greeting to someone you don't know. Should we write, "Dear person I don't know," on our resume cover letters?

3. Dearest Thickheaded HR Manager,
You haven't hired me yet, so you must be thick.

Give your significant other my warmest regards,
Martin

10. Hey DS1
When did you change avatars?

Coincidentally, I was just about to change to the evil monkey that lives in Chris' closet yesterday, myself. Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeird!

2. indeedy
usually feels that way, but use it sometimes, 'cause sometimes it is the best unavoidable jerk/asshole greeting

4. Now "Dear Cockgobbling Gonorrhea Dispenser" ...
... if you get that, that'd be a bit jerky.

6. If I get it from a job applicant, when I didn't post my name or title,
no. It's preferrable to "Dear Sirs."

If I get it from, say, someone dumping me...yes.

7. I do.
If I were in HR, and someone sent a resume with that, it would go straight in the can (unless for some reason I was advertising for a job in which the names of me or others were not given, forcing the people to say something like that; in that case, I would at least give the resume a quick scan, and if it was spot on perfect, then I wouldn't toss it in the can).

If I were in customer relations, I'd pay damn close attention, because I'd know it was either a complain or a compliment.

But using that phrase on a resume just shows that the writer couldn't be bothered to do any research on the company. If they can't be bothered to do research, I don't want them on the team.

8. "To Whom it May Concern"
is a salutation used if a number of different people are likely to see the later.

"Dear Sir or Madam" is actually the correct usage if the letter is intended for one person only but you don't know the name or the gender.

11. That's what I always used,
"Dear Sir or Madam" I mean.

Of course this reminds me of the Young Ones episode where Neil is writing a letter to the bank to ask for money from his trust fund, and his roommates 'help' him -- one of them calls himself an anarchist, another is an orange-haired punk rocker.

The opening, which starts out 'Dear Sir' ultimately morphs into 'Dear Fascist Bullyboy.'
