In Case You Ever Wondered Where The Phrase 'Sleep Tight' Comes From
In Shakespeare's time, mattresses were secured on bed frames by ropes...when you pulled on the ropes the mattress tightened, making the bed firmer to sleep on.

Just one more random, useless fact for tonight. God, I love these. :D

4. which explains why
the second part of that saying is "don't let the bedbugs bite." When I visited Ann Hathaways cottage in Avon they explained that the reason for the covers above the bed...Can't think what they are called but blanket or covering held above the bed...was to keep the mice and bugs from falling into the bed during the night.

6. The archaic definition of tight is soundly
Edited on Sun Nov-28-04 11:33 PM by seriousstan
so it meant sleep soundly. Historians say the phrase only goes back to 1866, with the bedbug part being added much later.
