3. Beautiful.
Very nice during the day, cold at night. My sis in law doesn't believe in turning on the heat until the kids turn up blue, so that part was hard the first night, but we had a great time. I love that city 'by the Bayeayeee'....showing my age.

6. I would definitely start at Fisherman's wharf
...very entertaining, great food, lots of locals as well as tourists. Interestingly enough, Haight/Ashbury has a Ben and Jerry's on one corner and a Gap on the other. How is that for gentrification?

10. Hahaha...
That is where all of the sea lions are, correct? I have seen lots of pictures! I may be wrong, but I think my BIL said that Haight/Ashbury is a real mess these days. He grew up in SF and it's always so interesting to hear him talk about it (he's 60, I'm just a youngin :)) That is very interesting about the Gap, etc.... :eyes:

18. Did you go to the Buena Vista?
Edited on Mon Nov-29-04 12:33 AM by TahitiNut
(It's required, you know.)

My favorite times were the Saturday or Sunday mornings I'd get up to the city around 8am, park near Market Street, and take a cable car to the Wharf. I'd have breakfast at the Buena Vista as soon as it opened and enjoy breakfast, a view of the flowers at the cable car stop, and conversation with whomever was at the table for six. On Sundays, I'd go from the Wharf to Glide Memorial for one of Cecil Williams' services. I'd then knock around the city for the rest of the day - or sometimes cross over to the Marin Headlands to sit in the grass and gaze at the bridge, city, and bay. (Geez, I miss it. The best city in the U.S. and 2nd in the world.)

Oh... and the best restaurant on the Wharf is hard to find. It's Scoma's and it's at the west end of the Wharf at the end of a northbound alley. The tourist traps are crap in comparison.

20. Of course.
...we spent the whole week sightseeing. The kids are so tired, I don't think they will be able to go to school in the AM.

8. I wish.
there were seven kids between us, and all the little ones had colds. We did a lot during the day, and virtually nada at night. Fine with me, actually, because my best dancing days are in the rear view mirror.

13. I'm a white guy
No matter how many times I try, I think my hips just are not built to move that way, re rhumba or salsa. But I can waltz and tango.

16. So am I.

Took me a while to get the hang of latin motion. And a lot of lessons. But don't worry about the hip motion, just have fun! :)

Decided to add this slightly more technical comment. One thing I've come to learn as I've been doing more and more dancing (and taking lessons with good instructors) is that a lot of what you *see* when you look at ballroom dance, or any dance, is the *result* of something happening internally that you can't see. When I first started dancing, I was trying to "move that way", but because I thought, for example, that what I saw hips doing in latin dance was a result of moving the hips in a certain way I got it all messed up. After a few months of explanation I figured out that the hips appear to move that way because of what the feet, knees, and upper body are doing... and then I was able to just "let it happen".

Anyway, sorry for the long windedness... I just think it's cool when I find things like that. You really learn how your body's connected.

But like I said, don't worry about it, just dance what's fun to dance!

14. I remember watching parts of the Democratic Convention in '80
at this great brass-n-glass tavern somewhere in SF...

Some alleged reporter from some Irish newspaper was ranting how Ted Kennedy has been screwed over, and that the elections were going to go very badly afterwords because of this...

Prescient, eh?

17. Did you ride a trolley or go to Chinatown?
Can I ask a strange question. I lived across the bay when I was a kid and returned to the area when I was a little older but I remember the great meals we would have in Chinatown. Now when I go to a Chinese restaurant they NEVER have a lazy susan to have communal meals and the freaking soup is so thick with cornstarch that I can't ever order it. Is it like that there now?

19. No, I don't think so.
we ate in Chinatown and rode a trolley and then did a little evening tour of the city. We had a fabulous meal, but I couldn't tell you where for all the tea in China. (a little humor there}

I just love that city. The GGPark on a weekend is awesome ... a super place for a picnic and tossing the Frisbee. Sometimes you'll see some celebrities there, too.

I guess one of the things I like most is the people. They smile. Man, I miss that.
