Did anyone see 'National Treasures' this weekend? And whaddya think? |
|
I saw it, and after being unimpressed for the 1st 5-10 minutes....thought it was 'good entertainment', but basically lame. However, it subtlely(sp?) DID introduced a lot of 'subject matter' into the mainstream forum.

1. I thought it was just OK |
|
I liked the historic elements, but I thought it was fairly predictable. I could have done without the Indiana Jones stuff in favor of a better story.

enlightenment? It was fun escape..and i guess everyone noticed the indiana jones influence. two things struck me though...reference to declaration of independance...about it being our "duty" to resist tyranny, and later that the constitution was framed to insure checks and balances, so that one person couldn't take over the govrenment.

interesting you mentioned it. I've been trying to move back wards in time as to where things are going...roll back the new deal?...roll back the emancipation proclamation? roll back the enlightenment? that means roll back the bill of rights. Yes this is very strange. I feel as though I'm in "Cabaret" watching the Nazis take over. And the Resistance is scattered, divided, unfocused, in shock, in denial. I find myself caught in the "frozen deer syndrome", thinking of all the things that should be done, and just eating, obsessively playing a kids on line video game, writing a children's book about a hudgeon, constructing a novel in my head about the whole mishagas, and hovering here on DU instead of actually doing anything.
Was that a Disney movie? Did they know what was being said? P.S. It's 3:32 a.m. as I write..is this middle of the night paranoia? I'm in the throes of reacting to an overload of information coming from all directions, wanting to run, move out of this country. I can understand how the Jews in Germany felt...the ones who refused to believe they should get out before it was too late. My own personal life is fine...comfortable. I dontwanna rock the boat. What is needed is crystal clear thinking. And an effective strategy. Hatred and anger are not enough. People keep talking about how "dumb" Bush is.Not that dumb...smart enough to steal the election twice and get away with it. I have no answers.

6. Ok their references to free masonry ARE REAL |
|
and the end, when they find that ancient GIGANTIC library was a plea to think and to learn... the lighting of that library from the darkness was more about coming in from the darkness
You did get the major references to the Declaration... and Tyranny that is good.
I guess the other references I lived them with my thesis.... which dealth with the period. The film is RICH with references to the founding fathers adn the intellectual millieu and why that is where we come from and where we must go back to.
In effect this movie is VERY CRITICAL of what is going on RIGHT NOW
That reference you caught, those who can must act, and you must act.
That is the meaning of that reference...

5. This was the DaVinci Code for kids. I will take my kids to see it. |
|
It was an odd flick for me. I didn't realize it was PG until I was leaving. Something strange about Nick Cage in that role. He seemed very much held back by the material. The comedy relief side kick was lame.

7. Beg to differ, I think the 'side kick' was the redeemining value in it all |
|
...for example, near the end - when the 'girl' asked if he was crying and he said, "yes...stairs".....the fortune meant nothing if he couldn't have life. What has real value?

8. And you did catch the repeated references to |
|
Abigail ADAMS, didn't you?
The head of the National Archives... the name abigail was not coincidental, nor her role....
I know a tad obscure but still I was chuckling and going NO, they are NOT going there, they are... WOW....
Abigail Adamns was a little rebel who believed in keeping the private sphere well private, well some of her modernized version was also a tad ahem, domestic, if you get my drift, but very deffensive of that treasure... the Declaration.

10. It has Nicholas Cage in it, which means I will not be seeing it. |
|
I can't stand Nicholas Cage. And I sure as hell won't be paying $10 to see him.
