school and become a professional gambler...yeah throw some clothes in a bag and take my chances on the road. I wish I could travel around Europe for a few years with no real responsibility. I'll never get to do these things but its nice to dream

2. I want to do the same thing actually. I've been thinking about it. |

Obviously lack of $$$ would likely become a problem, though my dad is loaded, but even more the fact that I don't know anybody with whom I could stand to travel for that long. As a skinny twenty-something chick, I don't see myself backpacking around the world all by myself.
I actually love school and studying, inordinately so, but I'm so sick of being trapped in the library for hundreds of hours, studying languages that I have little opportunity to practice, reading and writing about things that I really want to see for myself.
I just want to get away. Not some carefully planned vacation with tour guides, where you just make sure to go to all the usual famous spots in order to be able say that you saw them. I'd prefer to just wander and live spontaneously for a while.

I'm glad I did. you can do what you want, go where you want, you meet interesting people. Just do a little at a time. I almost didn't go because I didn't have anyone to go with. I'd be pissed now sitting here, if I'd let a little thing like 'no traveling companion' stop me.

5. That's a fair point. Ideally I would prefer to be on my own. |

I like to be free to spend hours somewhere without having to worry whether someone else is bored or wants to leave. I hate having to be responsible for others.
I only wonder if it is safe or practical. I hardly ever hear of people traveling alone and I assumed that it was for a reason.

6. sure it is safe and practical |

I had all these crazy fears before I left the first time. I am glad I went in spite of them. They disappeared once I got to where ever I was headed.
Also, you can travel with people you meet up with and drop them when your itineraries don't match any more
I think the prime thing is to be wise and alert. Really, it's just like being here.

4. My step-dad's ex-wife's ex-husband is a professional gambler. |

He apparently does pretty well at it, too. He's a mathematician, though.
I dunno. It's pretty risky.
But, I say if it's what you really WANT to do with your life- if it's what you enjoy- go for it.
Vegas sure ain't a bad place to be. :)

7. If you play a musical instrument you can be a Gypsy/Bohemian and play |

everywhere you go in Europe. It's hard living but a lot of fun, and it's easier to get by there "busking" than here. I did it a couple times in Europe, and also in Central and South America too. Hitch hiking is safe in places like Norway or Costa Rica, whereas in Texas you'll end up eaten by a cannibal serial killer... if you're lucky.
